The Yorkshire Oaks is a Group 1flathorse race in Great Britain open to fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run at York over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs (2,414 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August.
History
The event was established in 1849, and it was originally restricted to fillies aged three. The inaugural running was won by Ellen Middleton, owned by the 2nd Earl of Zetland.
The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and the Yorkshire Oaks was subsequently classed at Group 1 level. It was opened to older fillies and mares in 1991.
The race has been sponsored by Darley Stud since 2006, and it is currently held on the second day of York's four-day Ebor Festival meeting.
The Yorkshire Oaks often features horses which ran previously in the Epsom Oaks. The first to achieve victory in both races was Brown Duchess in 1861, and the most recent was Alexandrova in 2006.
Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər/ or /ˈjɔːrkʃɪər/) is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and to the open aspect of some of the major cities. Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed "God's Own County" or "God's Own Country".
In the redistribution which took effect for the 1868 general election the two divisions were redistributed into three. Eastern West Riding of Yorkshire was created and the Northern and Southern divisions modified. Each of the three divisions returned two members.
Thriller! Warm Heart defeats Free Wind for Yorkshire Oaks triumph
Aidan O'Brien recorded his seventh win in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks as Warm Heart (9/1) and James Doyle edged out Frankie Dettori on the Knavesmire.
Tracking the pace set by stable companion and eventual third Savethelastdance, Warm Heart produced her challenge entering the two-furlong pole and displayed a terrific attitude to get the better of Free Wind who stormed home, but could not quite reel in the winner.
James Doyle was recorded an important top-level victory in what has been an underwhelming year for the rider, whilst it was also his first winner for Aidan O'Brien.

What a mare! ALPINISTA books Arc ticket with Yorkshire Oaks success
Alpinista dug deep to bring up a magnificent seventh straight victory as she took the 2022 Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York. It was also the fifth time in a row the gutsy Kirsten Rausing-owned mare has triumphed at Group One level, with the success for the brave daughter of Frankel a first Group One on home soil for trainer Sir Mark Prescott since Marsha landed the Nunthorpe at the same track in 2017.
Irish Oaks winner Magical Lagoon and fellow raider La Petite Coco led the seven-strong field along in the early stages, with Luke Morris always in the slipstream of the leaders aboard the 7-4 favourite.

THE FUGUE glides to Yorkshire Oaks success on the Knavesmire in 2013 - Racing TV
The Fugue bounced back in style to take the 2013 Darley Yorkshire Oaks under William Buick for trainer John Gosden at York. The star mare had disappointed on her previous start when finishing last of seven in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown but it had subsequently transpired that she had scoped dirty in the aftermath and thus explaining the poor effort.
Racing against her own sex on this occasion, she travelled powerfully on her favoured fast ground as she loomed up to stalk the leaders in the straight. From there, it was a question of what she found when Buick asked for maximum effort and the response was electric as she quickened clear of her toiling rivals for a second career Group 1 success.

"It’s lovely to have a nice homebred filly like this," said Gosden in his post-race comments. "I’m happy for her as I thought she’d get very near to the colts in the Eclipse but she was very ill afterwards and that wasn’t her running. We had to miss the Nassau as a result but it meant she was on top form for this race and it’s all come right."
