A piston valve is a device used to control the motion of a fluid along a tube or pipe by means of the linear motion of a piston within a chamber or cylinder.
Cylindrical piston valves called Périnet valves (after their inventor François Périnet) are used to change the length of tube in the playing of most brass instruments, particularly the trumpet-like members of the family (cornet, flugelhorn, saxhorn, etc.).
Other brass instruments use rotary valves, notably the orchestral horns and many tuba models, but also a number of rotary-valved variants of those brass instruments which more commonly employ piston valves.
The first piston-valved musical instruments were developed just after the start of the 19th century. The Stölzel valve (invented by Heinrich Stölzel in 1814) was an early variety. In the mid 19th century the Vienna valve was an improved design. However most professional musicians preferred rotary valves for quicker, more reliable action, until better designs of piston valves were mass manufactured towards the end of the 19th century.
Piston valves are one form of valve used to control the flow of steam within a steam engine or locomotive. They control the admission of steam into the cylinders and its subsequent exhausting, enabling a locomotive to move under its own power. The valve consists of two piston heads on a common spindle moving inside a steam chest, which is essentially a mini-cylinder located either above or below the main cylinders of the locomotive.
Overview
In the 19th century, steam locomotives used slide valves to control the flow of steam into and out of the cylinders. In the 20th century, slide valves were gradually superseded by piston valves, particularly in engines using superheated steam. There were two reasons for this:
It is difficult to lubricate slide valves adequately in the presence of superheated steam
With piston valves, the steam passages can be made shorter. This, particularly following the work of André Chapelon, reduces resistance to the flow of steam and improves efficiency

Two-Minute Tech: How To Check Piston To Valve Clearance
Camshafts are an easy swap! But failing to check piston to valve clearance can lead to disaster. Here's how you can check.
A two-piece timing cover will allow you to do the swap without moving the oil pan which is especially convenient if your engine is still in the car. If you want to do it the traditional way, you clean one of the piston faces, put clay into the piston's valve pockets, add oil to keep the clay from sticking, and snug down the head with the gasket on.
With every cam swap you're going to want to check your lifters. A quick fix if you need one is set of comps OE style. Then add a pair of push rods and rocker arm set to 0 lash. After turning the engine over several times, you can remove the heads.
Cut away a small piece of clay in the area you want to check. Then use a...

How to check PISTON to VALVE CLEARANCE - Project Underdog #5
What is up engine heads! Today we're checking piston to valve clearance on Toyota 1.6 4AFE engine. I am checking piston to valve clearance because I want to use different pistons for my build. I want o use the pistons from the 1.6 4AGZE supercharged engine. But 4AG and 4AF engines have different valve included angles, resulting in different valve cutouts on the pistons, meaning that 4AGE pistons might not properly work with 4AFE valves.
Your piston to valve clearance is an extremely important measurement and should be checked and verified every time you modify something on your engine that can affect your piston to valve clearance. So stuff like getting higher lift and higher duration cams, shaving your cylinder head, decking your engine block, using different pistons, increasing the size...

Also be sure to clear out the bolt holes to get an accurate torque reading. Put the timing cover back in place and check the new cams by zeroing in the dial indicator and move the cam and be sure you're in the 10-20 thousandths range. Put everything back on correctly and you should be on your way.
