Pioneer plaque
The Pioneer plaques are a pair of gold-anodized aluminium plaques which were placed on board the 1972 Pioneer 10 and 1973 Pioneer 11 spacecraft, featuring a pictorial message, in case either Pioneer 10 or 11 is intercepted by extraterrestrial life. The plaques show the nude figures of a human male and female along with several symbols that are designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft.
The Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft were the first human-built objects to achieve escape velocity from the Solar System. The plaques were attached to the spacecraft's antenna support struts in a position that would shield them from erosion by interstellar dust.
History
The original idea, that the Pioneer spacecraft should carry a message from mankind, was first mentioned by Eric Burgess when he visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, during the Mariner 9 mission. He approached Carl Sagan, who had lectured about communication with extraterrestrial intelligences at a conference in Crimea.

When the unmanned space probe Pioneer 10 took off from Cape Canaveral in March 1972, it had on board a remarkable diagram. The Pioneer Plaque was designed to communicate fundamental facts about Earth and its inhabitants to life on other planets. In carefully engraved graphic images and mathematical symbols, the plaque would reveal the Earth's location in the solar system and show extraterrestrial intelligent life what human beings looked like.
But how could one single diagram do all that? What do you put in and what do you leave out? With its naked human figures, the plaque sparked arguments amongst feminists and conservatives.
So was it, in the end, a great intellectual game or was it the most enterprising, artistic and scientific diagram of all time, perhaps even the ultimate diagram?

With an 8-track tape memory system and onboard computers that are thousands of times weaker than the phone in your pocket, the two spacecraft sent back an immense amount of imagery and information about the four gas giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
But NASA knew that after the planetary tour was complete, the Voyagers would remain on a trajectory toward interstellar space, having gained enough velocity from Jupiter's gravity to eventually escape the grasp of the sun. Since they will orbit the Milky Way for the foreseeable future, the Voyagers should carry a message from their maker, NASA scientists decided.
The Voyager team tapped famous astronomer and science popularizer Carl Sagan to compose that message. Sagan's committee chose a copper phonograph LP as their medium, and over the course of six weeks they produced the "Golden Record": a collection of sounds and images that will probably outlast all human artifacts on Earth.

http://collectSPACE.com — A creative director obsessed with design and space exploration has launched a campaign to bring a "galactic greeting card" from billions of miles out into space back to Earth — by producing and offering exact replicas.
Forty-five years ago, NASA launched Pioneer 10, the first probe to encounter Jupiter and to achieve escape velocity from our solar system. Mounted to its antenna support was a gold anodized aluminum plaque that was engraved with "a little bit of where we are, when we are and who we are," according to the late Carl Sagan, who helped to create the plaque on the off chance that another space-faring society were to someday come across the derelict probe.
"[It] was quite possibly the most ambitious piece of visual communication ever conceived," said Duane King, as part of his Kickstarter campaign. "And now I am bringing it back to Earth."

The first message to leave the solar system from humans towards aliens was attached to the leg of the Pioneer 10 spacecraft. It was a plaque designed, amongst others, by Carl Sagan and Frank Drake. This gold plaque contained graphics indicating aspects of human culture and indicating their intelligence. There were two naked human silhouettes, a map of the solar system showing the path of the Pioneer spacecraft, a schematic of the hydrogen molecule, a silhouette of the spacecraft itself, and most importantly a pulsar map showing aliens how to triangulate the distance of the Earth in terms of eighteen different pulsars whose frequencies were marked out in binary tick marks along the line of each pulsar. It's again highly debatable whether anyone could understand or make sense of such a map. We would have to assume the visual sense and that they could understand or interpret the graphics that were represented on the plaque. Realistically, the Pioneer plaque should not be seen as an attempt to communicate but more as a message in a bottle thrown out into the depths of interstellar space to tell someone potentially far in the future that we exist, that we had a technology, and we were intelligent.

An excerpt from a 1994 interview with Dr. Hans Mark for 90.5 KUT-FM's "UT-Week-In-Review" radio program. Dr. Mark had recently stepped down as Chancellor of the University of Texas system and was teaching in the Aerospace Engineering dept. at The University of Texas at Austin. Douglas Barricklow conducted the original interview and produced this excerpt for YouTube.
Pioneer plaque
The Pioneer plaques are a pair of gold-anodized aluminium plaques which were placed on board the 1972 Pioneer 10 and 1973 Pioneer 11 spacecraft, featuring a pictorial message, in case either Pioneer 10 or 11 is intercepted by extraterrestrial life. The plaques show the nude figures of a human male and female along with several symbols that are designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft.
The Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft were the first human-built objects to achieve escape velocity from the Solar System. The plaques were attached to the spacecraft's antenna support struts in a position that would shield them from erosion by interstellar dust.
History
The original idea, that the Pioneer spacecraft should carry a message from mankind, was first mentioned by Eric Burgess when he visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, during the Mariner 9 mission. He approached Carl Sagan, who had lectured about communication with extraterrestrial intelligences at a conference in Crimea.
