The term Hokonui refers to several things in New Zealand, all directly or indirectly related to the area around the Southland town of Gore:
- Hokonui Moonshine, a present-day (legal) alcohol brand produced by the Southern Distilling Company

Hokonui (New Zealand electorate)
Hokonui was a parliamentary electorate in the Southland Region of New Zealand, from 1881 to 1890.
Population centres
The previous electoral redistribution was undertaken in 1875 for the 1875–76 election. In the six years since, New Zealand's European population had increased by 65%. In the 1881 electoral redistribution, the House of Representatives increased the number of European representatives to 91 (up from 84 since the 1875–76 election). The number of Māori electorates was held at four. The House further decided that electorates should not have more than one representative, which led to 35 new electorates being formed, including Hokonui, and two electorates that had previously been abolished to be recreated. This necessitated a major disruption to existing boundaries.
The electorate included the Hokonui Hills, the range of hills which rise above the Southland Plains, of which the hills mark a northern extremity.
History
The Hokonui electorate in the Southland Region of New Zealand was formed for the 1881 election. The 1881 election was contested by Henry Driver, Cuthbert Cowan and Peter Finn, who obtained 527, 431, and 121 votes, respectively. Driver was thus declared elected. Driver had previously represented the Roslyn electorate for four parliamentary terms. Cowan had represented the Wallace in 1869 following a by-election for only a few months. Peter Finn, a supporter of the previous Premier George Grey, was a barrister and solicitor from Invercargill who had previously been a politician in Victoria.

Hokonui (radio network)
Hokonui (previously known as Hokonui Gold) is an Adult Contemporary radio station that is based in Gore, New Zealand and broadcasting across Southland, South Otago, Mid Canterbury and South Taranaki. The name Hokonui comes from the Hokonui Hills which can clearly be seen in Gore and the Southland Plains.
History
The station was formerly known as 4ZG or Radio Hokonui, which broadcast on 558 AM and was operated by Radio New Zealand. 4ZG was first started in 1981 and the station was used in the evenings to broadcast the Concert Programme until 1990 when Concert FM began broadcasting on its own frequency in Southland. Overnight during the 1980s the station carried the ZM All Nighter from the 1ZM studios in Auckland. In 1992 4ZG was reduced to just 4 hours a day of programming and outside this time a simulcast of 4ZA was played. In the eyes of many this change seemed the station was dying of a slow and painful death so as a result two locals purchased the station. In 1994 4ZG became Hokonui Gold and reverted to being live and local.

The White Lion of Zimbabwe Sir Garfield Todd. Best known as a gentle and noble man, one who saw beyond colour and a man who lived amongst the people. Todd emigrated to Southern Rhodesia from New Zealand in 1934 as a Protestant missionary and ran the Dadaya New Zealand Churches of Christ Mission school. One of the primary-school teachers in his charge was Robert Mugabe. Though he had no formal medical training, Todd and his wife, Grace, set up a clinic where he delivered hundreds of babies some who were named after him and treated minor injuries. During the latter years of his reign as Prime Minister of Rhodesia, Sir Garfield Todd moved to lower property and education qualifications, but this was rejected and it caused an uproar from the then, Rhodesian government who all plotted his removal as prime Minister and the instillation of Ian Smith as his replacement.
He was later on imprisoned for 7 years, under house arrest, where he fed and sheltered guerillas and he joined Joshua Nkomo and other African nationalists in fighting for the liberation of Zimbabwe, whilst his daughter Judith Todd was in the UK campaigning for sanctions and pressure on Rhodesia. His daughter was also the one who published the Gukurahundi massacres to the outisde world at that time, and she was one of the few who were there and spent their last minutes with Lookout Masuku when he was imprisoned. This is where Garfield Todd's relationship with Mugabe deteriorated, Mugabe by the way, had been a primary school teacher at Todd's school in his earlier years and this is what Mugabe once said of the man. "I remember how little the Todds were paid - £2 a month - and how I borrowed a book from Grace Todd, who had at one point to sell her filing cabinet and a leopard skin to raise money for teachers' salaries because the total income from school fees only amounted to 30 shillings a year."
During retirement, He donated 3,000 acres to guerrillas disabled in the war for independence and who farmed the land for many years as the Vukuzenzele co-operative.
Mugabe later stripped Todd of his citizenship when he heard 3 schools in Bulawayo had been named after him and refused to let him cast his vote during the 2002 election. He died on 13 October 2002.
It was during Garfield Todd's death that the government decided to declare him a national hero. Todd's daughter, Judith, said that declaring her father a hero would be inappropriate and an embarrassment because he abhorred the ruling Zanu (PF) 's "suppression of democracy, erosion of civil liberties, assassination of opposition officials and supporters, arrests and torture, and the climate of fear spread throughout the country"

Best known as a gentle and noble man, one who saw beyond colour and a man who lived amongst the people.
