How do we use our 67-acre campus? We explore beyond the wall to gain a sense of place, inspire young scientists, encourage lifelong learning, and for research and recreation. Come along on a journey inspired by our 4th and 5th grades to see for yourself!
Background:
Happy 75th anniversary to us! Pine Point was started as a small school in 1948 by a group of people who recognized that a progressive and student-centered education was immensely important, and that the space in which teachers taught the students was equally important.
The School sits adjacent to a large piece of land, Manatuck Land Preserve, a 204.82-acre parcel originally owned by our neighbors, Manatuck Farms. Approximately 20 acres of the westerly portion of the land is currently maintained as open fields and farmland. The largest portion, around 150 acres, is mostly forested with streams and wetlands and is a natural area in which many plant and animal species can thrive. The land has conservation restrictions that require it to be forever committed to the preservation of forests, open space, wetlands, and meadows.
Mr. and Mrs. Moore and other friends of Pine Point had deeded a 42.2-acre section of the Manatuck Land Preserve property to the School. This section included the first two meadows behind the rock wall and the woods through which the cross-country trail winds. With the cooperation of Manatuck Farms and the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, which helps manage the property, Pine Point has been able to use the entire Manatuck Preserve for educational and recreational purposes. Teachers and students have utilized this amazing property throughout the year, enriching our learning and our community in many special ways.
We as a school community have used these spaces with great purpose, joy, and gratitude. How fortunate we are!
