The Northwest Territories (NWT; French: les Territoires du Nord-Ouest, TNO; Athabaskan languages: Denendeh; Inuinnaqtun: Nunatsiaq; Inuktitut: ᓄᓇᑦᓯᐊᖅ) is a territory of Canada. With a population of 41,462 in 2011 and an estimated population of 43,537 in 2013, the Northwest Territories is the most populous territory in Northern Canada.Yellowknife became the territorial capital in 1967, following recommendations by the Carrothers Commission.
The Northwest Territories, a portion of the old North-West Territory, entered the Canadian Confederation July 15, 1870, but the current borders were formed April 1, 1999, when the territory was subdivided to create Nunavut to the east, via the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act. While Nunavut is mostly Arctictundra, the Northwest Territories has a slightly warmer climate and is mostly boreal forest (taiga), although portions of the territory lie north of the tree line, and its most northern regions form part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
This riding was created in 1962 from Mackenzie Riverriding. It was composed of the entire territory of the Northwest Territories. In 1979, the riding was divided into the ridings of Western Arctic and Nunatsiaq (later Nunavut). Following the creation of the territory of Nunavut in 1999, the riding of Western Arctic was made coterminous with the new Northwest Territories.
After 1999, Western Arctic was an anomaly in that, unlike Nunavut and Yukon, it did not share the name of the territory with which it was coterminous. This did not change with subsequent representation orders because the electoral boundaries revision process did not affect the territories and the territorial riding names were specified in law. In 2014, at the behest of Western Arctic MP Dennis Bevington, the riding name was changed to Northwest Territories by Bill C-37, which also changed the names of several other ridings scheduled to come into effect with the representation order for the next election. Unlike those names, the change to Northwest Territories came into effect immediately as it involved amending the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act itself.
The first buildings were erected in 1952 during the original exploration and development campaign, and even before that a number of log cabins had been built in the late 1920s. The modern town was surveyed in 1962 and became operational by 1963.
The town was a joint-venture between the Canadian Government and the mine owner, Cominco. It became a territorial settlement in the 1970s with private businesses. As an unincorporated place, it recorded a population of 1,225 in the 1971 census. Pine Point had an elementary school (kindergarten to grade 5)—Galena Heights—and a grade 6 to 12 school, called Matonabbee School. The last graduating class was in 1988 as the mine was closing. Mike Lenton was the town's last mayor.
Pine Point is a cape landform in Richardson Bay, Marin County, California near the town of Sausalito. There was an early 1900 rail line in operation in the vicinity of Pine Point.
Pine Point was an area of early twentieth century residential land use, prior to the construction of Liberty ships in the local area.
Prehistory
The local area was originally inhabited by Native Americans, with the clearest demonstrable evidence of such early habitation on nearby Ring Mountain situated slightly to the north.

This video is about the once bustling mining town of Pine Point Northwest Territories Canada. This mine had a town of around 2000 people and was one of the largest lead zinc mines in North America at the time. The mines closed down in the late 1980's and the town was then abandoned and reclaimed. Nothing remains of the town other than a cemetery and a few streets.

Pine Point Mine: History in the Landscape
The Pine Point lead-zinc mine was operated from 1964 to 1988 on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in northern Canada. This film shows images of the abandoned mine from the summer of 2009, along with reflections from two Memorial University professors, John Sandlos and Arn Keeling, who are writing a history of the mine and its impact on local people.

Today in the vlog I go to the once town of pine point!
Pine Point was a mining town that went belly up in the late 80s.
All the structures were taken away by the time the 90s roll in.
But the streets are a long boarders dream.
Its just to bad the rain came......

It was in the dead of night that dog teams carrying gold seekers left Fort Resolution NWT. They were tracked by many others including missionaries and traders and soon the area was staked far and wide, for the good of the Church and for private gain. But there was disappointment the following summer after the receipt of the first accurate assays revealed the deposits were lead and zinc and had no precious metal values. Although many claims were staked that year, but it would be 67 years before the mine became a reality.
Pine Point was one of Canada's most profitable lead-zinc mines ever. Production started in 1964 by Pine Point Mines Ltd. (controlled and operated by Cominco). Pine Point was an open-pit operation extracting ore from at least thirty-six separate pits. The processing plant produced separate lead concentrate (assaying about 75 percent lead) and zinc concentrate (about 57 percent zinc). The concentrates were shipped on rail to the Cominco smelter at Trail BC, Japan and the United States.
