Béla Bartók'sPiano Concerto No. 3 in E major, Sz. 119, BB 127 is a musical composition for piano and orchestra. The piece was composed in 1945 by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók during the final months of his life, as a surprise birthday present for his second wife Ditta Pásztory-Bartók. It consists of three movements.
Context
The Piano Concerto No. 3 was one of the pieces composed by Bartók after departing Hungary after the outbreak of World War II. Bartók's migration from Europe to America preceded that of his music. Lack of local interest, combined with Bartók's extended battle with leukemia and a general sense of discomfort in the American atmosphere prevented Bartók from composing a great deal in his early years in America. Fortunately, the composer was commissioned to create his Concerto for Orchestra which was extremely well received and decreased the composer's financial difficulties.
This, combined with an abatement of his medical condition, allowed for a change in the composer's general disposition. The changes in the composer's emotional and financial state are considered by a few to be the primary causes for the third piano concerto's seemingly light, airy, almost neoclassical tone, especially in comparison to Bartók's earlier works.
The Piano Concerto No. 3 in A-flat major is the piano concerto composed by JapanesecomposerHisato Ohzawa. This work is subtitled Kamikaze after the aircraft Kamikaze, and was premiered by the baton of the composer on June 6, 1938, a month after the work was completed.
As obvious as it is from the year of composition, the name "Kamikaze" is not related to the suicide attackKamikaze employed by the Empire of Japan during World War II. This work was not successful partly because the progressive style of Ohzawa was beyond the comprehension of audiences of those days. Although the recording was broadcast on radio after the premiere, this concerto, quite demanding for both performer and audience, was not performed again for a long time. The composer's family published the score of this work on their own after his death.
Structure
This work consists of three traditional movements. This work is marked as A-flat, but he treated the tonality considerably freely.
The first movement, alleglo assai, begins with the declaration, by trombones and strigns, of "motto for whole work", three notes; A-flat, E-flat and F, which later appear as the fundamental elements of this work written in sonata form. First subject is gathered motives which remind the audiences of the aircraft flying through the clouds. The second subject is the melody savage as well as brilliant. Throughout the development, the music never fails to recall the sky journey. In the short coda, long tone of piccolo sounds as the aircraft flying away.
The Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37, was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1800 and was first performed on 5 April 1803, with the composer as soloist. The year for which the concerto was composed (1800) has however been questioned by contemporary musicologists. It was published in 1804. During that same performance, the Second Symphony and the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives were also premiered. The composition was dedicated to Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia. The first primary theme is reminiscent of that of Mozart's 24th Piano Concerto.
This movement is known to make forceful use of the theme (direct and indirect) throughout.
Orchestral exposition: In the orchestral exposition, the theme is introduced by the strings, and used throughout the movement. It is developed several times. In the third section (second subject), the clarinet and violin 1 introduce the second main theme, which is in the relativemajor key, E-flat major.
