Extracting the red phosphorus from matchboxes
Hey guys, today we are getting a little bit of Red P by scraping it off of matchboxes. This method is meant mostly for demonstration purposes. I don't condone the use of Red P for any illegal purposes. Also, the Red P that we get isn't super pure. There are some other things mixed into it.
The yield from this method is super low too, so you really won't be able to mass produce Red P. It it really only useful for the small scale experiments.

Phosphorus Cycle
Learn about the Phosphorus cycle. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for living organisms. It’s a building block of nucleic acids, like DNA, and phospholipids that form our cell membranes. It is also essential for plant growth.
In the natural world phosphorous is never encountered in its pure form, but only as phosphates, which consists of a phosphorus atom bonded to four oxygen atoms
Phosphate compounds are found in sedimentary rocks, and as the rocks weather—wear down over long time periods—the phosphorus they contain slowly leaches into surface water and soils. Volcanic ash and fertilizer can also be significant phosphate sources.

Phosphorus Cycle Steps
The Phosphorus Cycle is essential for life on Earth. It is considered a biogeochemical cycle.
In the video, I cover the phosphorus cycle steps.
Phosphorus is not found in the atmosphere but is found in rocks and is released by weathering.
Plants and animals absorb the phosphorus that is washed into the soil.
Eventually, the phosphorus is washed into sediment that is compressed into rock.

Phosphorus and kidney disease - American Kidney Fund
Phosphorus is a mineral found in almost all foods. It works with calcium and vitamin D to keep your bones healthy. Healthy kidneys keep the right amount of phosphorus in your body. When your kidneys are not working well, phosphorus can build up in your blood. Too much phosphorus in your blood can lead to weak bones that break easily.
Many people with kidney disease need to limit phosphorus.
Depending on your stage of kidney disease, your doctor may also prescribe a medicine called a phosphate binder. This helps to keep phosphorus from building up in your blood. A phosphate binder can be helpful, but you will still need to watch how much phosphorus you eat. Ask your doctor if a phosphate binder is right for you.
