Egypt: Aswan and the Temple of Philae
Aswan, the white and blue city, located at the mouth of the first cataract, where the last African fury of the river breaks on the rocks, is the symbol of the passage from nature to civilization. Phileas, south of Aswan, was an ancient Egyptian island, submerged in the 1970s by the rising level of the lake held back by the old Aswan Dam following the construction of the high dam. It houses a temple dedicated to Isis, one of the best preserved in ancient Egypt It is one of the major shrines of the goddess in Egypt and the main building of Philae

EGYPT: Philae Temple / Temple of Isis - Aswan
The temple complex of Philae was originally build on Philae, an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam (Lake Nasser), Egypt. Since the initial construction of the Aswan Low Dam in 1902, the area have been flooded so the temple complex was dismantled, piece by piece, and moved to the nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other complexes before the 1970 completion of the Aswan High Dam.
Although there are several temples and buildings located on Philae, the largest and the most famous is the Temple of Isis. Here, the ancient Egyptians worshiped the goddess Isis as well as Osiris and Horus (her son).

Philae's descent: The director's cut
On 30 July, the first papers covering the scientific results obtained by Philae on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko were published in Science magazine. On that occasion, we released a number of images taken by Philae on 12 November 2014, including a sequence of seven taken by the ROLIS downward-looking camera towards the end of the descent to the lander's first touchdown point at Agilkia, previously known as Site J. (As is now well-known, Philae rebounded after briefly touching down at Agilkia, eventually coming to rest at a site called Abydos.)
To mark the first anniversary of the selection of Site J as the target for Philae, we are releasing a “special edition” version of that ROLIS image sequence. The seven still images, each spaced by 10 seconds, have been interpolated i...

Once arrived, you’ ll be welcomed by a few souvenirs shops 🤑 and the official Ticket Booth: as of today, the price of the ticket for an adult is 150 egp; 10 usd
After buying the ticket, you’ ll have to find a deal for a boat trip to the island and back.
Be sure to confirm the price of the trip with the operator before you get on the boat, as some travelers have been surprised by the amount they can be charged for a ride. Personally, I paid 100 egp for a round trip; if you' re in a group you can of course split the costs.
As you start sailing across the Nile, you’ ll start to feel a kind of magic raising in the air. Many travelers have felt this, among them Amelia Edwards, a British novelist visiting the area in 1874:
The BEST TEMPLE in EGYPT ( at least for me :) The Temple of Isis at Philae Island 🛕 Temple of Philae
There’ s something mystical here.
✍️ ✍️ ✍️ Amelia Edwards, a British novelist in 1873–1874.
The approach by water is quite the most beautiful. Seen from the level of a small boat, the island, with its palms, its colonnades, its pylons, seems to rise out of the river like a mirage. Piled rocks frame it on either side, and the purple mountains close up the distance. As the boat glides nearer between glistening boulders, those sculptured towers rise higher and even higher against the sky. They show no sign of ruin or age. All looks solid, stately, perfect. One forgets for the moment that anything is changed. If a sound of antique chanting were to be borne along the quiet air–if a procession of white-robed priests bearing aloft the veiled ark of the God, were to come sweeping round between the palms and pylons–we should not think it strange.
Part of the temple’s appeal is its serene location, particularly in a country where many sites—while strikingly beautiful—are hot and crowded with visitors. Philae is different. Located in the middle of the Nile and surrounded by rural countryside, the island is cooled by breezes and alive with the sound of singing birds. While there were other visitors there on the day I visited, it was still possible to wander among the ruins in solitude.
The Philae Temple is enchanting,
When something is enchanting, it's a pleasure to look at, almost as if it's put a spell on you. The Old French enchanter, "bewitch or cast a spell," is at the root of enchanting, from the Latin incantare, "cast a spell on."
The temple was in danger of being submerged forever with the construction of the new Aswan dam (1960-1970), which flooded the area. Fortunately, the Egyptian government and UNESCO worked together to pump the area dry and relocate the entire temple, stone by stone (50,000 stones!), to a nearby island called Agilka, where it stands today.
On your feet, look out for the extremely creative guards who will do all in their power to get in your photos, or to point out the hieroglyphs that you can quite clearly see yourself, all for some baksheesh (tip)!
A taxi (20 minute drive) or a horse-drawn carriage from Aswan to the boat dock for the Temple of Isis should usually cost around LE 80 to LE 150 per vehicle, I
I will also show you the ticket prices to the temple !

Temple of Philae 🛕 🛕 🛕 is one of the most exquisite sites you’ ll see in Egypt, and my personal favorite.
The Temple of Philae is located on an island in the Nile River, and the only way to visit
is to take a boat operated by a local. 🛥️ 🛥️ You can reach the boat dock with a taxi, it won’ t take you more than 20 minutes from Aswan and expect to pay from 80 to 150 egyptian pounds, 💵 💵 💵 according your bargaining skill.

The seven still images, each spaced by 10 seconds, have been interpolated in time to create a movie that shows Philae's descent between 67 metres and just 9 metres above the surface in real time, taking just under 1 minute. The movie ends at that point, as there are no further images in the sequence: Philae had touched down at Agilkia before another 10 seconds had passed.
Having worked with Jakub Knapik, visual effects supervisor at Platige Image, Warsaw on our short sci-fi film, "Ambition", we were delighted when he took those seven ROLIS images and used state-of-the-art visual effects tools to interpolate between the images to create this movie sequence. The soundtrack for this sequence, an instrumental version of “Saline” from the 2008 album, “Experiments in Mass Appeal”, has been provided by Jem Godfrey of Frost*.

Philae Temple in Aswan
The Philae temple complex (/ˈfaɪliː/; Greek: Φιλαί or Φιλή and Πιλάχ, Arabic: فيلة Egyptian Arabic: [fiːlæ], Egyptian: p3-jw-rķ' or 'pA-jw-rq; Coptic: ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲕ, ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲕϩ,Coptic pronunciation: [ˈpilɑk, ˈpilɑkh]) is an island-based temple complex in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, downstream of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser, Egypt.
Philae Temple in Aswan
Until the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, the temple complex was located on Philae Island, near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt. These rapids and the surrounding area have been variously flooded since the initial construction of the Aswan Low Dam in 1902. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other complexes before the 1970 completion of the Aswan High Dam. The hieroglyphic reliefs of the temple complex are being studied and published by the Philae Temple Text Project of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna (Institute OREA).

Since Philae was said to be one of the burying-places of Osiris, it was held in high reverence both by the Egyptians to the north and the Nubians (often referred to as "Ethiopians" in Greek) to the south. It was deemed profane for any but priests to dwell there and was accordingly sequestered and denominated "the Unapproachable" (Ancient Greek: ἄβατος). It was reported too that neither birds flew over it nor fish approached its shores. These indeed were the traditions of a remote period; since in the time of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, Philae was so much resorted to, partly by pilgrims to the tomb of Osiris, partly by persons on secular errands, that the priests petitioned Ptolemy VIII Physcon (170-117 BC) to prohibit public functionaries at least from coming there and living at their expense.

In the nineteenth century, William John Bankes took the Philae obelisk on which this petition was engraved to England. When its Egyptian hieroglyphs were compared with those of the Rosetta Stone, it threw great light upon the Egyptian consonantal alphabet.

The islands of Philae were not, however, merely sacerdotal abodes; they were the centres of commerce also between Meroë and Memphis. For the rapids of the cataracts were at most seasons impracticable, and the commodities exchanged between Egypt and Nubia were reciprocally landed and re-embarked at Syene and Philae.
