The Clinical Trial Journey
Patients are waiting. That is what motivates Mayo Clinic’s researchers in their quest for better treatments and cures. Clinical trials bridge the gap between research and patient care, and help a discovery become a therapy. The clinical trial journey is how a medical intervention — such as a drug, device, or procedure — moves from an idea into patient care. From the lab to research with the help of volunteers and through review and approval for use, this animation will help you understand the biomedical research pipeline.

What is a Clinical Trial? (English)
Clinical trials are studies by scientists that test new ways to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat disease. Scientists ask volunteers to help test new medicines or ways of doing things during these trials.
Some of the things that clinical trials test include:
• New devices, such as blood glucose testers for people with diabetes, pacemakers, or implants
• New drugs, such as painkillers, medicines that lower your blood pressure, or treatments for cancer
• New vaccines
• New ways to do surgery or other procedures, such as a new kind of knee replacement, or surgery to repair the heart after someone has a heart attack and
• New routines to improve a person’s health, such as changes to diet and exercise

Clinical trials are research studies that involve people. Most clinical trials to test new cancer treatments are done in a series of steps, called phases. If a new treatment is successful in one phase it moves to the next phase. Let's take a look at the three main phases of clinical trials. Phase 1 trials are small enrolling less than thirty patients. Phase 1 trials are designed to find a safe dose of the new treatment, determine how the treatment should be given, and learn how it affects the body. If a safe doses found the new treatment goes to phase 2 testing. More patients are enrolled, usually 100 or less. Phase 2 trials study have the treatment effects the body, and how the treatment works for a certain type of cancer. If a new treatment is found to be safe and have some benefit, it goes to phase 3. This is when many participants are needed, usually more than 100 and sometimes thousands. Phase 3 trials compared the new treatment with the current treatment to see which one is better. One thing is certain with any phase trial, by taking part you will help future patients by helping today's scientists learn more about cancer. Clinical trials are experiments or observations done in clinical research. Such prospective biomedical or behavioural research studies on human participants are designed to answer specific questions about biomedical or behavioural interventions, including new treatments (such as novel vaccines, drugs, dietary choices, dietary supplements, and medical devices) and known interventions that warrant further study and comparison. Clinical trials generate data on safety and efficacy. They are conducted only after they have received health authority/ethics committee approval in the country where approval of the therapy is sought. These authorities are responsible for vetting the risk/benefit ratio of the trial – their approval does not mean that the therapy is 'safe' or effective, only that the trial may be conducted.
Phase 0- Phase 0 trials are optional first-in-human trials. Single subtherapeutic doses of the study drug or treatment are given to a small number of subjects (typically 10 to 15) to gather preliminary data on the agent's pharmacodynamics (what the drug does to the body) and pharmacokinetics (what the body does to the drugs
Phase 01- Often the first-in-man trials. Testing within a small group of people (typically 20–80) to evaluate the safety, determine safe dosage ranges, and begin to identify side effects. A drug's side effects could be subtle or long term, or may only happen with a few people, so phase 1 trials are not expected to identify all side effects.
Phase 02- Testing with a larger group of people (typically 100–300) to determine the efficacy and to further evaluate its safety. The gradual increase in test group size allows for the evocation of less-common side effects.
Phase 03- Testing with large groups of people (typically 1,000–3,000) to confirm its efficacy, evaluate its effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare it to commonly used treatments, and collect information that will allow it to be used safely.
Phase IV- Postmarketing studies delineate additional information, including the treatment's risks, benefits, and optimal use. As such, they are ongoing during the drug's lifetime of active medical use

Clinical trials have helped us learn how to live longer with illnesses like cancer, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Clinical trials have also helped us use vaccines to eliminate some diseases like polio in the United States.
Each clinical trial has a research plan that explains in detail how the study will be run. This plan includes information about who the scientist will ask to participate.
Sometimes scientists are looking for people who have a specific disease to participate in the clinical trial. Sometimes scientists need healthy people to participate in the clinical trial.
The purpose of a clinical trial is to determine if the treatment, prevention, or behavior changes that are being studied are safe and effective.
Clinical trials are reviewed, approved, and monitored by a group of people not involved in the study. This group makes sure that the study is being conducted in an ethical manner and that the rights and welfare of the participants are being protected. These groups are called Institutional Review Boards or IRBs.
In the United States, a clinical trial must have an IRB if it is studying a drug, biological product, or medical device that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates, or if the clinical trial is funded or conducted by the federal government.

LIVE: GA v. Chloe Driver, Day 6 | Cult Baby Murder Trial
LIVE COURT CAM: Cult Baby Murder Trial Day 6 - Chloe Driver, a 22-year-old polygamist, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for multiple charges, including malice murder, in the Dec. 2020 death of her 13-month-old daughter, Hannah. Police discovered Chloe and Hannah in a bedroom, both suffering from stab wounds. Driver’s defense claims that her toxic environment as one of three wives in a polygamist cult, coupled with mental illness, led to the death of the toddler at the hands of her mother. Prosecutors have argued that Driver was sane when she ignored opportunities to leave her extremist lifestyle and blamed mental illness after the fact while continuing to communicate with the baby's father.
