View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-happened-to-trial-by-jury-suja-a-thomas
In the United States today, juries decide less than 4% of criminal cases and less than 1% of civil cases filed in court. At the same time, jury systems in other countries are growing. So what happened in the US? And could the disappearance of juries be a good thing? Suja A. Thomas explores both sides of this dilemma.

Judged by Twelve: You Don't Want a Trial by Jury
Although we're all familiar with the phrase, "I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six," a trial by jury is never as straightforward as it seems. Why jury trials are becoming less common
A new analysis of federal court cases published last week by The New York Times shows that jury trials are becoming increasingly less common. In 1997, 3,200 out of 63,000 federal defendants were convicted in jury trials. But by 2015, even as the number of defendants grew to 81,000, jury convictions dropped to 1,650.
