#071 - Uncovering the Latin Polemical Tradition & Petrus Alphonsi with Dan Attrell | Glitch Bottle
Dan Attrell - Canadian-born intellectual historian, classicist and philosopher, also known as ‘The Modern Hermeticist’ - shares about the Latin Polemical Tradition, how converts from Judaism to Christianity debated Talmudic esotericism and theology, and how these debates and anti-Jewish sentiments shaped the thought of Renaissance humanist philosophers Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola. Dan examines the streaming ribbons of thought how throughout medieval European history, Petrus Alfonsi's converso mysticism and natural philosophy went on to influence many great intellectuals from the monastic and mendicant traditions (such as Joachim of Fiore, Ramon Marti, Paul of Burgos, and Jerome of Santa Fe), culminating in both the Christian interpretation of Kabbalah, and the development of ...

36. Disciplina Clericalis.
[A poet] presented his badly composed verses to the king. [...] The king did not receive him well and asked him whose son he was. The poet said he was the nephew of [a] famous author, at which the king burst out laughing. [...] The king said, “I once read a book containing a fable, which I now see before my eyes.”
They asked him what it was and the king said:
“A fox found a newborn mule in a field, and, surprised, asked him: ‘Who are you?’
“The mule said he was a creature of God.
“The fox asked him, ‘Have you a father or a mother?’
“The mule said, ‘My uncle is a noble horse.’
“And just as this mule did not claim the ass as his father because it is a lazy, ugly animal, so this poet is ashamed to confess his father…”
The Disciplina Clericalis — which has been translated into English...

Andrea Robiglio, "Introduction to Romance Philosophy: On the Benefit to Medieval Studies"
The Medieval Institute is pleased to present the final installment, rescheduled from fall 2021, of its 75th Anniversary Alumni Lecture Series with Andrea Robiglio, SIEPM Fellow at the Institute from 2006–7.
ABOUT THE TALK
The term "romance philosophy" is, though already occasionally employed, arguably new as a category in the studies of medieval thought and intellectual history. Elaborating on some established polar oppositions attested in the scholarly literature (such as clerical vs. lay, Latin vs. vernacular, and academic vs. popular), I shall in my lecture try to illustrate a partially-new approach by building upon four relevant case studies: Petrus Alfonsi, Thomas Aquinas, Marguerite Porete, and Dante Alighieri.

The Light Ages with Seb Falk
I interview Seb Falk on "The Light Ages", with my guest J. A. Velasco. We get right to the core of Seb's book and discuss whether people in the middle ages were doing science; we talk about whether people in the middle ages saw themselves as collaborating and competing with each other; and, finally, we look at some fascinating individuals and how they thought about the world, from Robert Grosseteste, Roger Bacon, Petrus Alphonsi, and Ibn al-Haytham.
After the interview I spend some time with J unpacking the concept of medieval science and think further about what it means for an activity to be "scientific". For more discussion on "The Light Ages", check out the Forum page on my website: https://www.pleaseexpand.com/forum. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about it!

The Disciplina Clericalis — which has been translated into English as “The Scholar’s Guide” — is a curious collection of aphorisms and (often salacious) short stories put together by Petrus Alphonsi in the early twelfth century. Who is this educating, and from what perspective? How does the dialogue format function in education? Is this an educational text at all? Suzanne and Chris have a dialogue about it.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Andrea Aldo Robiglio is Professor of the History of Philosophy at the Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte at KU Leuven. He has held appointments at the Universities of Nijmegen, Fribourg (Switzerland), Leuven, Freiburg im Breisgau, the CNRS (Paris), and Groningen. At the University of Notre Dame he was fellow of the Société Internationale pour l’Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale from 2006–7. He is co-editor-in-Chief of the OA journal Mediterranea: International Journal on Transfer of Knowledge (Cordoba, Leuven, London, and Philadelphia).
PRODUCTION
Videography: ND Studios
Captions will be corrected after the lecture concludes.
