Regional Rail Systems in North America: Top 10 Train Networks That Connect Suburbs to Cities
We used to call these "commuter rail" services. But given regional transportation needs and a worldwide pandemic, Regional Rail is now the preferred term, with services focused on improving connections between suburbs and the central city. We'll look at historical US commuter rail providers like MBTA, SEPTA, Metro-North, LIRR, and NJ Transit, as well as taking closer looks at what our neighbors to the north (GO Transit in Toronto and exo in Montreal, and the Tren Suburbano in Mexico City) are up to.
Also, we'll spend some time exploring the new Moynihan Train Hall addition to NY Penn Station.

Omsi good scenery (004) MTR 港鐵 觀塘綫 ( Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway ) Kwun Tong @ 296A City
Map:296a (By Calvin 1995)

In 2020, the UK Prime minister, Boris Johnson approved a controversial and massive transport infrastructure project for the country, called HS2. In 2024, after over 15 years of planning. With estimated costs ballooning almost four times to a staggering £106 Billion pounds, and several massive changes to the blueprint, HS2 is still yet to be delivered.
The project was meant to connect the disproportionately populated London with the rest of the UK, including cities like Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds, with the eventual goal of stretching all the way to Scotland. But the project was mired with problems from the start.
The huge environmental costs and damage to England's iconic landscapes and wildlife had protests rising up all over the country. Legal battles ensued, adding years and tens of millions of pounds to a budget that was spiralling out of control. It seemed as if the project was doomed to join other great transport engineering follies of the modern age, such as the Moscow Monorail, or the California High Speed Rail.
This is in contrast to China's High-Speed Rail network, the largest rail network in the world. The idea for this was originally floated long after planning for HS2 began in the UK, but quickly overtook it in rollout and delivery.
HS2 would have been completed in just under 2 years at the pace and level of investment. Instead, it labours on, far from the destination it promised, and at four times the predicted cost. Could this be the United Kingdom’s biggest, and most costly, infrastructure blunder ever?

The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) is the rapid transit railway system in Hong Kong. It is one of the most profitable systems in the world, with a high farebox recovery ratio of 186%.[5] Opened in 1979, the system now includes 218.2 km (135.6 mi) of rail[3] with 155 stations, including 87 railway stations and 68 light rail stops.[1] The MTR system is operated by MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL).
Under the government's rail-led transport policy,[6] the MTR system is a common mode of public transport in Hong Kong, with over five million trips made in an average weekday. It consistently achieves a 99.9% on-time rate on its train journeys. As of 2012, the MTR has a 46.4% market share of the franchised public transport market, making it the most popular transport option in Hong Kong.[7] The integration of the Octopus smart card fare-payment technology into the MTR system in September 1997 has further enhanced the ease of commuting on the MTR.
Construction of the MTR was prompted by a study, released in 1967, commissioned by the Hong Kong Government in order to find solutions to the growing road congestion problem caused by the expansion of the territory's economy.[8] Construction started soon after the release of the study, and the first line opened in 1979. The MTR was immediately popular with residents of Hong Kong; as a result, subsequent lines have been built to cover more territory. There are continual debates regarding how and where to expand the MTR network.[9][10]
As a successful railway operation, the MTR has served as a model for other newly built systems in the world, particularly in mainland China.
