Constans II Pogonatos
February 641 AD, emperor Heraclius was dead and the roman state faced a massive threat. The Arabs, and their new Islamic faith had taken the fertile crescent by storm defeating Roman and Persian field armies in their respective provinces of Syria and Mesopotamia. While the imperial government struggled to contain the advance of the muslims, unstable finances and religious strife brought further destabilization.

Constans II: Struggle For Survival
Constans II or Constantine the Bearded as he was sometimes known ruled at a time when the Caliphate's Jihad was at its strongest. He executed his own brother, lost a number of major battles and saw Egypt, Libya and Armenia lost to the Arabs but he held the line, reformed the empire by introducting an early version of the Theme system and restored political stability to the empire with a dynasty that would continue until the end of the century.

Middle Ages (Lecture 16): "The clash between the Roman Church and the Byzantines (604–668)
This video has accurate SUBTITLES. Please, make use of them to enhance your video experience!
With this lecture, we go back to the Rome of the VII century, a city reduced to the ghost of itself, but where something new was about to start. A society full of intrigue and brutality, with rapacious Byzantine officials and intransigent religious leaders, under the influence of an emperor heavy-handed with his opponents and risk-friendly, himself exposed as well to extreme danger.
And - outside of the intricacy of the relationships between the Roman Church and the Byzantine State - the presence of hostile and aggressive states: the Lombard Kingdom and duchies, the Caliphate, the Frankish kingdoms.
An age full of threats, on the look for a new equilibrium, but still far from it both in Italy...

List of Byzantine revolts and civil wars
This is a list of civil wars or other internal civil conflicts fought during the history of the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire (330–1453). The definition of organized civil unrest is any conflict that was fought within the borders of the Byzantine Empire, with at least one opposition leader against the ruling government. For external conflicts, see the list of Byzantine wars. For the period before the division of the Roman Empire in West and East, see List of Roman civil wars and revolts (753 BCE – 476 CE).

The Exarchate of Ravenna was a leading part of the Byzantine Empire, established in the 6th century AD. It encompassed the territories of central and northeastern Italy, with Ravenna as its capital. This video delves into the rich history, cultural significance, and political dynamics of this pivotal region.
From its inception in the aftermath of the Byzantine reconquest of Italy under Emperor Justinian I, the Exarchate played a crucial role in maintaining Byzantine control over the Italian Peninsula amidst the chaos of the post-Roman world. Ravenna, renowned for its splendid Byzantine mosaics and architectural marvels such as the Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, served as the political and cultural heart of the Exarchate.
The video explores the Exarchate's interactions with neighboring powers, including the Lombards, Franks, and the Papal States, shedding light on the complex geopolitical landscape of early medieval Italy. It also delves into the Exarchate's internal dynamics, such as its administration, economy, and religious life, highlighting the enduring influence of Byzantine civilization on Italian soil.
Despite its eventual decline and absorption into the Carolingian Empire in the 8th century, the legacy of the Exarchate of Ravenna endures in the art, architecture, and cultural heritage of Italy. Through detailed narration, captivating visuals, and expert analysis, this video offers a comprehensive exploration of one of the most fascinating chapters in Italian and Byzantine history.

An age full of threats, on the look for a new equilibrium, but still far from it both in Italy and in Constantinople ...
CONTENTS of Lecture 16:
- 00m00s 1) The Typos;
- 03m49s 2) The Papacy until Honorius I;
- 08m05s 3) An upsetting episode;
- 13m58s 4) The opposition to the Ekthesis;
- 19m28s 5) The opposition to the Typos;
- 28m04s 6) The Emperor in Italy;
- 34m37s 7) The Emperor in Rome;
- 42m22s 8) The end of Constans II.

This is a list of civil wars or other internal civil conflicts fought during the history of the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire (330–1453). The definition of organized civil unrest is any conflict that was fought within the borders of the Byzantine Empire, with at least one opposition leader against the ruling government.
