Constans (Latin:Flavius Iulius Constans Augustus; c. 323 – 350) or Constans I was Roman Emperor from 337 to 350. He defeated his brother Constantine II in 340, but anger in the army over his personal life and preference for his barbarian bodyguards led the general Magnentius to rebel, resulting in the assassination of Constans in 350.
On 25 December 333, Constantine I elevated Constans to the rank of Caesar at Constantinople. Constans became engaged to Olympias, the daughter of the Praetorian PrefectAblabius, but the marriage never came to pass. With Constantine’s death in 337, Constans and his two brothers, Constantine II and Constantius II, divided the Roman world between themselves and disposed of virtually all relatives who could possibly have a claim to the throne. The army proclaimed them Augusti on September 9, 337. Almost immediately, Constans was required to deal with a Sarmatian invasion in late 337, over whom he won a resounding victory.
His name is a clue of a potential relationship to Flavius Constantius, his Western colleague in the consulate and later Western Emperor with the name of Constantius III; however the sources do not mention any relationship among the two.
In this video, I explore the career of Constans II the Bearded, the grandson of Heraclius and grandfather of Justinian II, who ruled the Byzantine Empire between 641-668. Constans II is hardly a household name, but one can argue that he should be. Many Byzantine scholars believe that Constans II was the emperor who established the theme system, the reorganization which gave the struggling empire a new lease on life and gave it the strength to regain much of its lost power in the centuries following the reform's implementation. Otherwise, Constans II was known for his imposing beard, military failures, and autocratic acts of cruelty.

Constans II: Struggle For Survival
Constans II or Constantine the Bearded as he was sometimes known ruled at a time when the Caliphate's Jihad was at its strongest. He executed his own brother, lost a number of major battles and saw Egypt, Libya and Armenia lost to the Arabs but he held the line, reformed the empire by introducting an early version of the Theme system and restored political stability to the empire with a dynasty that would continue until the end of the century.
