Oldham/ˈɒldəm/ is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, amid the Pennines between the rivers Irk and Medlock, 5.3 miles (8.5km) south-southeast of Rochdale and 6.9 miles (11.1km) northeast of Manchester. Together with several smaller surrounding towns, it is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham of which it is the administrative centre.
Historically in Lancashire, and with little early history to speak of, Oldham rose to prominence in the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture. It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and among the first ever industrialised towns, rapidly becoming "one of the most important centres of cotton and textile industries in England". At its zenith, it was the most productive cotton spinningmill town in the world, producing more cotton than France and Germany combined. Oldham's textile industry fell into decline in the mid-20th century; the town's last mill closed in 1998.
Although a 20th-century creation, the borough has Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman heritage. It encompasses several former mill towns, which expanded and coalesced during the late-19th century as a result of population growth and advances in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Although some parts contiguous with the city of Manchester are highly industrialised and densely populated, about two-thirds of the borough is composed of rural open space; the eastern half stretches across the South Pennines.
For its first 12 years the borough had a two-tier system of local government; Oldham Council shared power with the Greater Manchester County Council. Since the Local Government Act 1985 Oldham Council has effectively been a unitary authority, serving as the sole executive, deliberative and legislative body responsible for local policy, setting council tax, and allocating budget in the district. The Metropolitan Borough of Oldham has two civil parishes and 20 electoral wards. Noted as one of the more unpopular amalgamations of territory created by local government reform in the 1970s, the Oldham borough underwent a £100,000 rebranding exercise in early 2008. The town has no listed buildings with a Grade I rating, and the borough's architecture has been described as "mediocre". There have been calls for the borough to be renamed, but that possibility was dismissed during the rebranding of 2008.

Oldham Town Centre (Most deprived town in England) | 4K Walk
A walk through Oldham, I really felt a sense of community from this small town. Walking through the market (not filmed) it was full of locals shopping at the locally ran stalls, the butchers and greengrocers. Not a common sight nowadays with the chains taking over. It was nice to see.
Definitely not the prettiest or best kept town I've visited but it felt nice to be there, even just for a short trip.

More than 300 bodies found in Oldham mass grave - most belonging to babies and children
More than 300 bodies have been found in a mass grave in a cemetery in Oldham. Most of the remains belong to babies and children.
The unmarked grave was found by chance by a woman looking for the last resting place of her baby twin brothers who were born in 1962.
Before the 1980s, stillborn babies were taken away from families, who were not given any details of where they were buried.
The government says work is being done to improve the way burial records are kept.

So, whether you're a curious traveller or simply want to learn more about what makes or breaks a place, is Blackpool a good place to live?
Dangerous City to Live In
Let’s begin by telling you this bitter truth about Blackpool. Trust us, it is not all sunshine and rainbows. Are you ready to peel back the layers of this shadowy town? Well then, please just keep following along. Blackpool holds the title of the most dangerous major town in Lancashire, and it is not backing down from that reputation. It ranks as the third most dangerous location overall out of a whopping 236 towns, villages, and cities in the county. In 2022, the overall crime rate hit a staggering 162 crimes per 1,000 people, a figure that stands head and shoulders above Lancashire's overall rate of 83 per 1,000 residents.
Looking at the national stage, Blackpool takes the podium as the third most dangerous major town in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and it ranks 174th overall in the list of all towns, cities, and villages. The numbers don't lie—Blackpool has a story to tell, and you need to learn more.
Next, we take a look at the drama of the months. May 2022 painted a grim picture as Blackpool claimed the dubious title of having the worst bicycle theft rate in Lancashire, with 40 reported cases and a crime rate of 0.27 per 1,000 inhabitants. October 2022 wasn't any better, marking Blackpool as Lancashire's burglary hotspot, recording a staggering 97 cases at a rate of 0.67 per 1,000 residents. And then, as the year came to a close, December 2022 was a dark month with 142 reports of criminal damage and arson, earning Blackpool the title of having the highest crime rate for these offences in Lancashire at 0.97.
But amidst the shadows, there's a stark reality to confront. Violence and sexual offences dominate the crime landscape in Blackpool, with a staggering 11,339 incidents reported in 2022, translating to a crime rate of 78. This marks a 6 per cent increase from the previous year, a haunting reminder of the challenges the town faces. On a brighter note, bicycle theft is the least common crime here, with 205 reported cases in 2022, marking a 38 per cent increase from 2021's figure. So, as you step into Blackpool, remember that beneath the glitz and glamour of its seaside charm, there's a town with its unique story, a story that keeps you on your toes and reminds you to stay vigilant.

What would you like to know about Oldham? Hey there, folks! It’s a beautiful day to be alive. Welcome! Today, we're diving deep into the heart of Lancashire to uncover the secrets of a town that has often been a topic of mixed opinions. Buckle up as we take you on a journey to explore the infamous town of Blackpool. Although this town is known by some as a coastal gem for its vibrant entertainment and stunning seaside views, you'll discover that it has its fair share of quirks and challenges that might just make you think twice about calling it home.

Oldham is a town in Greater Manchester, England, it lies amongst the Pennines on elevated ground between the rivers Irk and Medlock, 7 miles (11.3 km) northeast of Manchester. It is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, which had a population of 237,110 in 2019.
Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, and with little early history to speak of, Oldham rose to prominence in the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture. It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and among the first ever industrialised towns, rapidly becoming "one of the most important centres of cotton and textile industries in England." At its zenith, it was the most productive cotton spinning mill town in the world, producing more cotton than France and Germany combined. Oldham's textile industry fell into decline in the mid-20th century; the town's last mill closed in 1998.
