Greater Manchester spans 493 square miles (1,277km2), which roughly covers the territory of the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, the second most populous urban area in the UK. It is landlocked and borders Cheshire (to the south-west and south), Derbyshire (to the south-east), West Yorkshire (to the north-east), Lancashire (to the north) and Merseyside (to the west). There is a mix of high-density urban areas, suburbs, semi-rural and rural locations in Greater Manchester, but land use is mostly urban — the product of concentric urbanisation and industrialisation which occurred mostly during the 19th century when the region flourished as the global centre of the cotton industry. It has a focused central business district, formed by Manchester city centre and the adjoining parts of Salford and Trafford, but Greater Manchester is also a polycentric county with ten metropolitan districts, each of which has at least one major town centre and outlying suburbs.
Manchester was settled by colonists around 1672 as a farming community, although at the time it was known just as Orford Parish (the name that can be found on the memorial to the Revolutionary soldiers from the town). The many rivers and brooks provided power for paper, lumber and textile industries, and the town quickly evolved into an industrial center. The town of Hartford once included the land now occupied by the towns of Manchester, East Hartford, and West Hartford. In 1783, East Hartford became a separate town, which included Manchester in its city limits until 1823.
The Pitkin Glassworks operated from 1783-1830 as the first successful glassworks in Connecticut. The Pitkin Glassworks Ruin have been preserved by a historical society.
The station has two side platforms in the median of the Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway). The platforms can be accessed using elevators and lifts from Manchester Avenue below the freeway. This station has two parking lots, one or each side of the freeway with a total of 127 spaces. The entrance to the station is provided by stairs and elevators under the freeway. Metro Local line 115 stops directly below the station at the street level (Manchester Avenue). On September 6, 2011, the new stop located directly below the Manchester Silver Line station opened for Metro Local line: 115. The new stop is only for eastbound passengers. A westbound stop for lines 115 was not constructed. The station was upgraded with improved lighting in December 2010. CCTV and next bus trip arrival television screens were added onto the station in December 2012 and the monitors became activated on June 2013.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of trying to take a pyrotechnic into the stadium and a male for a racially aggravated public order offence. A 53-year-old man was assaulted after the game, police said.
The clubs said such incidents were wholly unacceptable, saying in a joint statement: "We are fully committed to working together to eradicate these issues from our fixtures. They have no place in football."
The last few years have seen a number of incidents occur between supporters, with the latest meeting at Anfield in October marred by offensive graffiti about Hillsborough being written in the away section and allegations of chanting about the 1989 disaster, in which 97 fans died.

Police investigating a break in at a service station and the theft of a safe in Oldham have released CCTV.
At around 1.45am on Tuesday 27 February 2018 police were called to the Co-Op service station on Athens Way in Lees, Oldham after the back office was broken into and a safe was stolen.
Officers attended and an investigation was launched.
Police are now issuing CCTV of the burglary in the hope someone may recognise the four men in the footage and the vehicle they used.
Detective Constable Zahir Hussain from GMP’s Oldham Borough said: “Although the men are all wearing balaclavas, we still hope that someone may recognise one of the men or have some information that could help us with our investigation.
As you can see in the CCTV, the safe was extremely heavy; it took all four men to lift it. This is not something that will have been easily transported or hidden and would have taken a lot of effort to get into.
We hope that in the days following the burglary someone may have seen people trying to get into the safe or may have seen the men transporting it from the car.
We would really like to hear from anyone with any information, no matter how small.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 9080, alternatively call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Greater Manchester Police are investigating several incidents of crowd trouble during Manchester City's Carabao Cup match with Liverpool on Thursday night, including one that led to a 15-year-old girl being treated for head injuries.
The clubs issued a joint statement condemning the violence, which they called "hugely disappointing". City won the match 3-2 to progress to the quarter-finals.
"We are aware of a number of objects, including coins and a smoke bomb, that were thrown during (Thursday's) match," GMP's match commander, Superintendent Gareth Parkin, said. "We will be investigating the incidents and reviewing CCTV from the night."

A suspected child rapist and a man wanted on suspicion of attempted murder are among Greater Manchester's most wanted. Police officers have almost halved the number of fugitives still on the run over the last fortnight. But as Michael Billington reports, detectives are now asking for the public's help to track down hundreds more wanted men and women.
