Neighbors Roman and Minnie Castevet (Sidney Blackmer and Ruth Gordon) soon come nosing around to welcome the Woodhouses to the building; despite Rosemary's reservations about their eccentricity and the weird noises that she keeps hearing, Guy starts spending time with the Castevets. Shortly after Guy lands a plum Broadway role, Minnie starts showing up with homemade chocolate mousse for Rosemary. When Rosemary becomes pregnant after a mousse-provoked nightmare of being raped by a beast, the Castevets take a special interest in her welfare. As the sickened Rosemary becomes increasingly isolated, she begins to suspect that the Castevets' circle is not what it seems. The diabolical truth is revealed only after Rosemary gives birth, and the baby is taken away from her. Polanski's camerawork and Richard Sylbert's production design transform the realistic setting (shot on-location in Manhattan's Dakota apartment building) into a sinister projection of Rosemary's fears, chillingly locating supernatural horror in the familiar by leaving the most grotesque frights to the viewer's imagination. This apocalyptic yet darkly comic paranoia about the hallowed institution of childbirth touched a nerve with late-'60s audiences feeling uneasy about traditional norms. Produced by B-horror maestro William Castle, Rosemary's Baby became a critically praised hit, winning Gordon an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Inspiring a wave of satanic horror from The Exorcist (1973) to The Omen (1976), Rosemary's Baby helped usher in the genre's modern era by combining a supernatural story with Alfred Hitchcock's propensity for finding normality horrific.

The Real Wild West: A History of The American Frontier | Documentary
Every country has a past that seems to be embraced within their contemporary character projected on both themselves and to the wider world. For the Nordic nations of Sweden and Norway, it's their Viking ancestry. For Japan, it's their feudal period with tales of the Samurai. For England, it's their history of Kings and Queens with Knights clad in armour while for the United States it is their tales of the Wild West.
We all have an idea of what the Wild West was like with visions of gunfights in the streets between heroes and villains, cattle trains thundering across open plains, bandits leaping on trains to rob its passengers, and enduring animosity between the white settlers and the native peoples. All of it has been ingrained in the public consciousness after decades of movies, books an...

Filthy Secrets of Life on the American Frontier
The American frontier was a wild place. In less than seventy years, the US went from about 300,000 square miles that were the original 13 colonies to controlling the entire continental US that we know today, gobbling up an astounding 2.8 million square miles of land. It’s one of the largest, fastest land grabs in history. And the things that went down during this time weren’t for the faint of heart. The period was marked by near-continual warfare, often in impossible terrain. It took a certain kind of crazy to survive on the frontier.
Today on Nutty History, we will be discussing the Filthy Secrets of the Frontiersmen.

United States History Documentary | American frontier | us history according to Americans
This episode of Empire Builders tells the story of the United States through twelve key historic sites. It starts in Philadelphia with the Declaration of Independence and Washington D.C.'s Washington Monument. The Mississippi River was important to the spread of America westward with the purchase of the Port of New Orleans. Andrew Jackson's capture of Spanish Fort Barrancas at Pensacola resulted in the transfer of Spanish Florida to the US. The Battle of the Alamo was a major event in the American conquest of the West, leading to Texas joining the United States and the Spanish American War in 1848.

Westward Expansion: Crash Course US History #24
In which John Green teaches you about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn't as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we're conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn't a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool...

In this documentary, we are going to examine the true history of the old West and study how its influence has helped define the culture of the modern American nation. This is the story of the Real Wild West.

Not cool, American pioneers.
Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. The Man in the Arena – Teddy Roosevelt (A Powerful Speech from History)
Read by Shane Morris
-
On April 23, 1910, a year after leaving his presidential office, Theodore Roosevelt gave what would become one of his greatest rhetorical triumphs. The most famous section of his speech still resonates and inspires, even today.
It is not the critic who counts.

Theodore Roosevelt | Historians Who Changed History
it's time to talk about Theodore Roosevelt, who preferred his military title of Colonel, found Teddy to be a childish nickname, and was often simply went by TR. Yes, he was a historian and a prolific writer, as you can see in the bibliography below, which only has a few of his books. He certainly shaped the American history field - becoming one of the three important figures for solidifying the frontier myth as the basis for American exceptionalism. TR was a part of historiographic shift that had major ramifications. I'm somewhat ambivalent about the Colonel. He was certainly an imperialist, white supremacist, war-monger, and nationalist - but he also seemed to learn from his mistakes, unlike Wilson, whom he fervently despised. TR was a strong reformer, Jack of all trades, veteran, an...

Hardcore Facts About Teddy Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was more than the man behind the Panama Canal and the inspiration for the teddy bear. He was a cowboy. A soldier. An explorer. A badass. When Teddy Roosevelt, or T.R. as he was commonly known, was a child, he had health issues. He overcame these by living what he called a "strenuous life." That's putting it lightly.

it's time to talk about Theodore Roosevelt, who preferred his military title of Colonel, found Teddy to be a childish nickname, and was often simply went by TR. TR was a strong reformer, Jack of all trades, veteran, and just a fun dude.

Wiki: Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (/ˈroʊzəvɛlt/ ROH-zə-velt;[b] October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919), often referred to as Teddy or by his initials, T. R., was an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president under President William McKinley from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. Assuming the presidency after McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt emerged as a leader of the Republican Party and became a driving force for anti-trust and Progressive policies.
