Salisbury Plain | Songs of England #10 | Old Sarum, Wiltshire
New to this series? Explore the full playlist: http://bit.ly/3azFCkX
In this new series in collaboration with The Nest Collective, we explore the stories behind traditional English folk songs that have connections to historic places.
Collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1904, the traditional song Salisbury Plain is set on the vast spacious landscape of the same name in England's South West. A defining feature of the plain is Old Sarum, the remains of an ancient city atop the steep slopes of an Iron Age hillfort, looking across to modern Salisbury. This was once a bustling metropolis and was the place where William the Conqueror secured the loyalty of England's barons and landowners.

Old Sarum Hillfort | Aerial Film of Huge Iron Age Earthwork in Salisbury, UK | Megalithomania
An aerial film of Old Sarum, a huge earthwork raised in about 500BC by Iron Age settlers and later occupied by Romans, Saxons and Normans. It included a castle and a royal palace, and by the mid-12th century it was a busy town with a fine new cathedral, the outline of which can be seen today. Lack of water and arguments between the church and military lead to the building of a new settlement by the river, now known as Salisbury. Old Sarum was abandoned and fell into ruin. Indications of prehistoric settlement have been discovered from as early as 3000 BC and it is located only a few miles from Stonehenge. Visit Old Sarum on the Megalithic Mysteries of England Tour in July 2022 which includes private Stonehenge access: http://www.megalithomania.co.uk/englandtour.html.

The Abandoned Hill With Two Members Of Parliament
Old Sarum, in Wiltshire, is a now-desolate hillfort run by English Heritage. But it was once one of the most important sites in southern England: so important that it had two members of Parliament. Then, it became a "rotten borough": and a warning about power.

Ancient Exploration: Old Sarum
Old Sarum was the original site of the cathedral city of Sailsbury, that began life in around 400 BC as a vast Celtic Iron-Age fort.
Following the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror created an inner motte and castle, transforming it into a nigh-impregnable fortress, with its own city and cathedral.
However, Old Sarum was not a good site for a city, and after the clergy demanded the cathedral moved to the site of New Sarum (modern Sailsbury) the site was eventually abandoned to become a rotten borough, until 1832, when the Reform Act was passed.

We look around Old Sarum Castle And Cathedral. Salisbury's original cathedral stood next to the royal castle, high on top of a Iron Age fort, where Romans, Saxons and the Norman's all left their mark in 2000 years of history. Fantastic views all around.
