How do ocean currents work? - Jennifer Verduin
Dive into the science of ocean currents (including the Global Conveyor Belt current), and find out how climate change affects them.
--
In 1992, a cargo ship carrying bath toys got caught in a storm. Shipping containers washed overboard, and the waves swept 28,000 rubber ducks and other toys into the North Pacific. But they didn’t stick together -- the ducks have since washed up all over the world. How did this happen? Jennifer Verduin dives into the science of ocean currents.

The 33rd Global Ocean Oxygen Network (GO2NE) webinar took place on 13 December 2024 and welcomed:
Esther Kennedy, University of
Alaska Southeast, USA, speaking on the geography of multivariate climate vulnerability produces mosaic of risks and tradeoffs for California Current shellfish species;
Yusuke Kawaguchi, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo, Japan, speaking on direct observations of vertical turbulent fluxes of dissolved oxygen using an eddy-covariance system (ECS);
with moderator Shin-ichi Ito, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo, Japan.
At each webinar of this series, speakers present the latest science on the impacts of reduced oxygen in the open ocean and coastal zones. Each webinar usually features two presentations - one each from a senior scientist and an earlier-career scientist. Each presenter speaks for 20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute moderated Q&A session.
GO2NE is an Expert Working Group under the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO).
