NRF2 pathway as the mechanism behind sulforaphane’s protective effects | Jed Fahey
The 1992 discovery of sulforaphane, a compound derived from broccoli and broccoli sprouts, paralleled the discovery of Nrf2, a cellular protein that participates in the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE biological pathway. Nrf2 regulates the expression of cytoprotective proteins that protect against oxidative stress due to injury and inflammation. Sulforaphane is the most potent naturally occurring inducer of Nrf2. In this clip, Dr. Jed Fahey describes the early co-discoveries of sulforaphane and Nrf2, and describes the importance of the Nrf2 pathway.

LifeVantage | Nrf2 Science
Nrf2 communicates with cells, instructing them to do what they’re already designed to do. When activated, Nrf2 enters the nucleus of a cell and up-regulates "survival genes," genes that enable cells to survive in the face of stress from free radicals and other oxidants, and down-regulates other genes that help the body function at an optimal level.

Epigenetics - The Power Of The Nrf2 Pathway
I've presented several videos indicating that lifestyle factors are obviously very important in determining whether your brain is going to be healthy or you are going to be at risk for a degenerative condition of the brain. An example being Alzheimer's disease. It turns out that the reason that the high carbohydrate, the lack of physical exercise, gluten and other things that lead to inflammation are so important is because they tend to increase, as mentioned, inflammation. The process of inflammation is tied in intimately with increasing free radicals. These are the two pillars. Inflammation and the action of free radicals ultimately damage brain cells and lead to death of brain cells. In this video we will dive deeper into this process and what you can do to prevent it.

Her groundbreaking work discovered that a protein that is critical for cell survival has two distinct mitochondrial localizations with disparate functions, linking its anti-apoptotic role to a previously unrecognized role in mitochondrial respiration and maintenance of mitochondrial structure. Her dissertation findings were published in the 2012 issue of Nature Cell Biology.
Dr. Patrick trained as a postdoctoral fellow at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute with Dr. Bruce Ames. She investigated the effects of micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) inadequacies on metabolism, inflammation, DNA damage, and aging and whether supplementation can reverse the damage. In addition, she also investigated the role of vitamin D in brain function, behavior, and other physiological functions. In February of 2014 she published a paper in FASEB on how vitamin D regulates serotonin synthesis and how this relates to autism.
Dr. Patrick has also done research on aging at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences. At the Salk she investigated what role insulin signaling played in protein misfolding, which is commonly found in neurodegenerative diseases.
