Improving The Northeast Corridor and Acela Into World Class High Speed Rail
The Northeast Corridor IS high speed rail. Fight me to the death! This is the only high speed rail we have in the United States, at least for 5 or 10 years until Brightline West or California High Speed Rail are operating.

The NEC and Acela service are roundly derided as not real high speed rail, and some of that is deserved. It's certainly not fast high speed rail, and it's not high speed rail at an international standard, at least not in the last 30 years. Amtrak's Northeast Corridor is busy, old and falling apart
Amtrak's Northeast Corridor stretches between Washington and Boston. It's a busy stretch of railroad, with parts that date back almost 150 years. A delayed transportation infrastructure project moves forward in the Northeast Corridor
It's been called the most urgent infrastructure program in America — but for decades, the Gateway Program has been on hold. The $30-billion project would see a dramatic upgrade to transportation infrastructure in the most heavily used section of the Northeast corridor rail system. A new tunnel under the Hudson River is a key element. Hari Sreenivasan reports.

Amtrak & NJ Transit High Speed Northeast Corridor Trains @ Princeton Junction (9/5/19)
READ:
Recorded from 1245 to 1945. Track 2 is out of service, so all eastbound trains are routed on track 1. Additionally, for the first half of the video, emergency track repairs had track 4 out of service as well, resulting in westbound trains low-leveling. Enjoy the action =)

It's certainly not fast high speed rail, and it's not high speed rail at an international standard, at least not in the last 30 years. However, there is room for improvement and its possible to turn the corridor around and make it more respectable compared to modern high speed rail. Places with far few resources than the United States have decent HSR right now, so I think it's reasonable to expect the same here at home. Capital investment on high speed rail isn't cheap. This video will look at various options and ideas being floated and will try to conclude what travel times might be achieved and at what cost.

High speed rail makes the most sense, when it's able to connect major population centers in a more convenient way than either personal vehicles or airplanes. It's because of this that the Northeast Corridor makes for the absolute best place for high speed rail in the United States today. And while Amtrak's current Acela line gets close to reaching that goal, more could be done to make this corridor even better, including an up and coming potential magnetic levitation train line.
