Foster was born to Robert Foster and Lilian Smith in 1935 in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire. They moved, soon after his birth, two miles to 4 Crescent Grove in Levenshulme, Manchester, which they rented for fourteen shillings (70p) a week: Foster has no recollection of Reddish.
He attended Burnage Grammar School for Boys in Burnage. In a Guardian interview in 1999, Foster said he always felt 'different' at school and was bullied. and he retired into the world of books.

Norman Foster - Through feat. Ninon Valder (Ninon Valder, flute/alto flute/bass flute - Antonio Fresa, piano and programming). Con la sua cappella, Foster mette in condizione sia la luce sia l’aria di essere “suonate”, trasformando la sua chiesa in un grande strumento musicale. Ho scritto dunque un pezzo per 5 flauti, uno basso, due alti e due in do per riportare la sensazione del vento che passa attraverso la struttura architettonica che modifica e modula l’aria. La tensostruttura in acciaio mi ha fatto pensare ai metalli e anche per questo ho inserito un quintetto di flauti a disposizione dell’unica cappella costantemente illuminata, dove il senso del suono e l’architettura coesistono in modo profondo. - @antoniofresa
