Why oil-rich Nigeria has trouble exploiting its wealth | DW News
Nigeria and its oil wealth is a complicated story. The west African nation is the continent's biggest oil producer, and it ranks eleventh in global terms. But it has a hard time attracting foreign investment - prompting President Muhammadu Buhari to free Nigeria's state-owned oil firm from state control earlier this month.Oil accounts for 90 percent of Nigeria's exports but it's had problems exploiting that wealth of crude - producing well under its daily OPEC quota. It's estimated that about a tenth of the oil pumped ends up stolen: In the first quarter of 2022 that was crude worth a billion dollars. Where it ends up is a dirty business. Illegal refineries mark Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta. Dirty and dangerous: Back in April, an refinery exploded, killing more than a hundred people.

The Battle Raging In Nigeria Over Control Of Oil
Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse.
Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either.

Taking oil companies to task for contamination of the Niger Delta | DW News
The discovery of oil in Nigeria was meant to transform the nation's fortunes by bringing prosperity. Nearly seventy years on, it has been the main driver of the economy, but at a heavy cost.
A new report commissioned by the government of Bayelsa, an oil-producing state in the south of Nigeria, details the extensive contamination of its land, its water and its people's bodies, from oil leaks and spills.
And it's blaming the oil companies. DW's Flourish Chukwurah has been to Bayelsa to assess the damage.

“All the oil that is sold around here, the government calls illegally refined products,” local oil businessman Don Wizaro told VICE News. And when the Nigerian military raids illegal oil operations, they slash containers, releasing oil into waterways, contaminating what the main source of fishing, agriculture, and drinking water.
As the government continues its assault on illegal refineries and barges carrying stolen oil, local militias are retaliating. And one of the most notorious militias is the Niger Delta Avengers. They attack pipelines and infrastructure, significantly affecting both the environment and the economy.
VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni heads to the heart of Nigeria's oil production to witness firsthand the fight over the control of oil in the Niger Delta.

It seemed peace was to come to the Niger Delta but the fighting and oil sabotage has resumed. A powerful report filmed before the amnesty but with many participants sceptical the world remains as pertinent as ever.
A fisherman pulls an empty net from waters that have sustained his family for generations:"Because of oil spillage we can't get fish to sustain ourselves, let alone to sell." Despite the huge oil industry 90% of locals are unemployed. Frustration led many to fight, decimating Nigeria's oil output. Now policy is being scrutinised - senior officials question the lack of development in the Niger Delta; The way the oil companies have acted thus far is a little irresponsible. An amnesty was offered to militants willing to disarm. Some accepted but many were sceptical; Amnesty will not disarm the Niger Delta. It will only quell it.

A Super Quick History of Niger
Regarding the pronunciation of Niger, in my understanding the traditional English pronunciation was and is ˈnaɪdʒər (Nigh-Jer). That’s just how we say it. It is, however, increasingly being pronounced niːˈʒɛər (Ni-Zhair) which is the French pronunciation. Since the latter has increased in popularity, the former is sometimes regarded as ‘wrong’, when it is nothing of the sort. It is simply the English rendering of the word, just as we say ‘Rome’ not ‘Roma’ and ‘Spain’ not España and ‘Munich’ not ‘München’.

Russia Signs Satellite Deal With Mali, Niger & Burkina Faso | Firstpost Africa
Russia Signs Satellite Deal With Mali, Niger & Burkina Faso | Firstpost Africa
Russia has signed a strategic satellite deal with the junta-led nations of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. As part of the deal, Russia will deploy telecommunications and remote-sensing satellites above the three West African nations. The technology will boost border surveillance and national security in all three countries which are facing a worsening Islamist insurgency. This partnership is the latest sign of Russia’s expanding influence in the region. The military-led governments of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have turned their backs on the United States and other Western allies. The juntas have instead forged closer ties with Russia. However, some analysts have raised doubts over Moscow's ability to combat ...

Russia has signed a strategic satellite deal with the junta-led nations of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. As part of the deal, Russia will deploy telecommunications and remote-sensing satellites above the three West African nations. The technology will boost border surveillance and national security in all three countries which are facing a worsening Islamist insurgency. This partnership is the latest sign of Russia’s expanding influence in the region. The military-led governments of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have turned their backs on the United States and other Western allies. The juntas have instead forged closer ties with Russia. However, some analysts have raised doubts over Moscow's ability to combat terrorism in West Africa as extremism continues despite its assistance to the armies. Will Russia's latest move keep its edge over Western rivals? Watch for more.
