The main character is James Arnold Ross Jr., nicknamed Bunny, son of an oil tycoon. Bunny's sympathetic feelings toward oilfield workers and socialists provoke arguments with his father throughout the story.
The novel served as a loose inspiration for the 2007 film There Will Be Blood.
Characters
James Arnold Ross (aka Dad): is a self-made oil millionaire.
James Arnold "Bunny" Ross, Jr.: the protagonist, is the only son of a self-made oil millionaire.
Paul Watkins: a farmer's son who runs away from home, is tutored by a free thinker, and becomes an advocate for the rights of laborers. After spending time in Siberia after World War I, he sympathizes with Bolshevism and becomes a Communist.
An oil is any neutral, nonpolarchemical substance that is a viscousliquid at ambient temperatures and is both hydrophobic (immiscible with water, literally "water fearing") and lipophilic (miscible with other oils, literally "fat loving"). Oils have a high carbon and hydrogen content and are usually flammable and slippery.
The general definition of oil includes classes of chemical compounds that may be otherwise unrelated in structure, properties, and uses. Oils may be animal, vegetable, or petrochemical in origin, and may be volatile or non-volatile. They are used for food, fuel, lubrication, and the manufacture of paints, plastics, and other materials. Specially prepared oils are used in some religious ceremonies as purifying agents.
Etymology
First attested in English 1176, the word oil comes from Old Frenchoile, from Latinoleum, which in turn comes from the Greekἔλαιον (elaion), "olive oil, oil" and that from ἐλαία (elaia), "olive tree", "olive fruit". The earliest attested forms of the word are the Mycenaean Greek𐀁𐀨𐀺, e-ra-wo and 𐀁𐁉𐀺, e-rai-wo, written in the Linear B syllabic script.
Oil is a Christianthrash metal band from Long Beach, California, USA. The band was formed in 1997 by Ron Rinehart, the former vocalist with Dark Angel, who converted to Christianity at a Harvest Crusade after Dark Angel's dissolution in 1992. Other members include lead guitarist Blake Nelson (formerly with Deceiver, Desire and Captain Black) and drummer Jason Vander Pal. Oil has released two studio albums and one live album.
In 2004, Rinehart left the band to pursue other non-musical interests. The rest of the group is looking for a new vocalist.
The Refine album was well-reviewed for its honest, no frills metal approach. The band performed live gigs, including a show at the Stryper Expo, but Rinehart received an injury soon after the album release which meant Oil did not perform for nearly a year. Once recovered, Rinehart and Oil returned to performing, being announced as special guests to Disciple in April.
The band recorded a live album Choice Cuts Off the Chopping Block at the First Baptist Church in Downey, California, in November 2002. The record included two new acoustic songs, "This Is My Prayer" and "Medicine Man". When bass guitarist Matthew Joy opted out in May 2003, Oil recruited Jonathan Thiemens of Blind Sacrificies as a temporary replacement. This became permanent in July.
In English usage the palm, or small palm, also called handbreadth or handsbreadth, was originally based on the breadth of a human hand without the thumb, and has origins in ancient Egypt. It is distinct from the hand, the breadth of the hand with the thumb, and from the fist, the height of a clenched fist. It is usually taken to be equal to four digits or fingers, or to three inches, which, following the adoption of the international inch in 1959, equals exactly 7.62centimetres. It is today used only in the field of biblical exegesis, where opinions may vary as to its precise historic length.
In other areas, such as parts of continental Europe, the palm (French:palme, Italian:palmo) related to the length of the hand, and derived from the Roman great palm, the Latin:palmus major.
History
Ancient Egypt
On surviving Ancient Egyptiancubit-rods, the royal cubit is divided into seven palms of four digits each. Five digits are equal to a hand, with thumb; and six to a closed fist. The royal cubit measured approximately 525mm, so the length of the ancient Egyptian palm was about 75mm.
Fingers contain some of the densest areas of nerve endings on the body, are the richest source of tactile feedback, and have the greatest positioning capability of the body; thus the sense of touch is intimately associated with hands. Like other paired organs (eyes, feet, legs) each hand is dominantly controlled by the opposing brain hemisphere, so that handedness—the preferred hand choice for single-handed activities such as writing with a pencil, reflects individual brain functioning.
Some evolutionary anatomists use the term hand to refer to the appendage of digits on the forelimb more generally— for example, in the context of whether the three digits of the bird hand involved the same homologous loss of two digits as in the dinosaur hand.
Palm oil is cheap and ubiquitous. It’s used in thousands of everyday products and is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet. You can get a kilo of palm oil for just $2. But its usage has become unsurprisingly controversial, as huge areas of rainforest have been cut down or burned to make way for palm plantations. So, why is this oil still so cheaply and readily available?

Safeguarding the rainforests - The future of palm oil | DW Documentary
Palm oil can be found in countless products in supermarkets around the world. Producing it involves clearing huge areas of rainforest. But there are more sustainable methods and alternatives.
The unchecked expansion of oil palm plantations poses a threat to the climate, biodiversity, and the habitats of many animal species. Among the alternative options to palm oil is an innovative idea from Germany. Ludovic Gerboin was frustrated by a problem that plagues him and many bakers: the amount of unsold, leftover bread at the end of every day. By chance, he met Thomas Brück, a professor of synthetic biotechnology at the Technical University of Munich who was working on creating a palm oil substitute. Out of their partnership came a new alternative: yeast oil, produced from roasting, shredding, ...

Palm oil can be found in countless products in supermarkets around the world. Producing it involves clearing huge areas of rainforest. But there are more sustainable methods and alternatives.

By chance, he met Thomas Brück, a professor of synthetic biotechnology at the Technical University of Munich who was working on creating a palm oil substitute. Out of their partnership came a new alternative: yeast oil, produced from roasting, shredding, and fermenting stale bread. Thomas Brück says his yeast oil has a longer life than palm oil and can be reused up to 60 times.
Sulastri Rahmawati's oil palm plantation on the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo enables her to feed her family of six. She's one of millions of people around the world who are dependent on the plant. Oil palm trees boast an enormous yield that meets the growing demand for vegetable fats. Rahmawati and her cooperative started growing oil palms 20 years ago. This used to mean deforestation, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers. Now, however, they're committed to sustainable production and taking social responsibility.
But even sustainable oil palm production leads to huge amounts of harvest waste. Together with partners in Thailand, German entrepreneur Markus Matuschka has devised a way of making a new raw material from oil palm fruit that can provide a substitute for timber and paper.

In this video, Dr. Berg discussed the differences between palm oil and coconut oil.
Palm Oil
• It absorbs fewer pesticides or chemical fertilizers than coconut oil, soy oil, and corn oil.
• It has 50% saturated fat – 40% of which is called Palmitic.
Palmitic Acid Uses: Energy
• It has very high sources of vitamin E complex - It is one of the main antioxidants that protects the inside of the arteries from oxidative damage.
Benefits of Vitamin E Complex:
o Anticancer
o Antitumor
o Neuroprotective
o Counters radiation damage
o Regrowing the hair
• It also has vitamin A.
• Phytonutrients – like Phytosterols which are the precursors to steroid hormones.
Coconut Oil
• 9x lower palmitic acid
• High in lauric acid (which turns into monolaurin) – beneficial to the immune system, antiviral, and antimicrobial.
• A portion of coconut oil is medium-chain fatty acids – good to increase energy.

Why Palm Oil Is So Cheap

Few ingredients are as widespread or as notorious as palm oil. But although this crop is a major driver of deforestation, this oil might just be our most sustainable option. So what can we do to make palm oil production more sustainable?
