Nigel Kennedy (born 28 December 1956) is a British violinist and violist. He made his early career in the classical field, and has more recently performed jazz, klezmer, and other music genres.
Nigel Kennedy's grandfather was Lauri Kennedy, principal cellist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and his grandmother was Dorothy Kennedy, a pianist. Lauri and Dorothy Kennedy were Australian, whilst their son, the cellist John Kennedy, was born in England. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, at age 22, John joined the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, later becoming the principal cellist of Sir Thomas Beecham's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. While in England, John developed a relationship with an English pianist, Scylla Stoner, with whom he eventually toured in 1952 as part of the Llewellyn-Kennedy Piano Trio (with the violinist Ernest Llewellyn; Stoner was billed as "Scylla Kennedy" after she and John married). However, they ultimately divorced and John returned to Australia. Nigel Kennedy has about 30 close relatives in Australia, whom he visits whenever he tours there.
Myles Storr Nigel Kennedy (12 October 1889 – 19 January 1964) was a British barrister, army officer, and politician. He served a single term in Parliament as a Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP), but never contributed to any debate. He was a member of Lancashire County Council for nearly twenty years. His Military and political career came to a premature end when his colourful private life brought about a court judgment against him and resulted in his bankruptcy.
He was the last proprietor of Roanhead mines, which he managed from 1914 until they were worked out in July 1942.
Kennedy's father, Myles Burton Kennedy, was a Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Lancashire who lived in Stone Cross near Ulverston in the Furness or North Lonsdale area of the county. Kennedy was his eldest son and was born in Ulverston in 1889. He attended Harrow School before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge. He was admitted to the degree of a Bachelor of Arts in 1911, and proceeded to the degree of Master of Arts in 1916. After leaving Cambridge, Kennedy began to study law through the Council of Legal Education.

James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music; and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music".
Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the US Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the chitlin' circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by Linda Keith, who in turn interested bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals in becoming his first manager. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the US after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the US; it was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
Jimi Hendrix is a 1973 rockumentary about Jimi Hendrix, directed and produced by Joe Boyd, John Head and Gary Weis. The film contains concert footage from 1967 to 1970, including the Monterey Pop Festival the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, Woodstock and a Berkeley concert. The film also includes interviews with Hendrix' contemporaries, family and friends. People appearing in the film include Paul Caruso, Eric Clapton, Billy Cox, Alan Douglas, Germaine Greer, Hendrix' father, James A. "Al" Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Eddie Kramer, Buddy Miles, Mitch Mitchell, Juggy Murray, Little Richard, Lou Reed and Pete Townshend.
The film is also known as A Film About Jimi Hendrix. The title was used on the 2005 DVD-cover and theatrical poster.
The soundtrack to the film features 12 songs as well as excerpts from interviews with Hendrix, his father Al Hendrix, Little Richard and others.
The estate of Jimi Hendrix authorized the 1973 film to be re-released on video and DVD in 1999. An expanded DVD edition was issued in 2005, featuring a new documentary, From the Ukulele to the Strat, with more remembrances of Hendrix through interviews with family and friends, the making of "Dolly Dagger", with producer-engineer Eddie Kramer breaking down the studio mix of the song and unreleased archive footage of a performance of "Stone Free" from the July 4, 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival.
Soundtrack Recordings from the Film Jimi Hendrix is the soundtrack to the 1973 documentary film, Jimi Hendrix and the second live album by him. The double album was released by Reprise Records in July 1973. It contains the full-length live performances from the film and some clips from interviews (though not necessarily from the film). The album peaked at No. 89 on the Billboard album chart, which generated concern at Reprise Records that repackaging old material would no longer satisfy the fans of Jimi Hendrix. The album has not been released on compact disc.
The documentary (or rockumentary) was made in 1973 by Joe Boyd, John Head and Gary Weis for Warner Bros. The film contains concert footage from 1967 to 1970, including material from Isle of Wight and the Monterey Pop Festival. The film also includes interviews with Hendrix' contemporaries, family and friends. The estate of Jimi Hendrix authorized the 1973 film to be re-released on video and DVD in 1999, and a special edition DVD was released 2005.
Crossover violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy has spent the past 30 years interpreting the works of legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Here, accompanied by the Polish Chamber Orchestra, Nigel Kennedy puts his unique personal spin on Jimi Hendrix’s classic song “Purple Haze” during a concert at La Citadelle in Carcassonne, France, on July 17, 2005. Violinist Nigel Kennedy’s discography is extensive, and he’s always shifted among genres, whether classical, jazz, klezmer or rock. In the late 1990s, he formed The Kennedy Experience along with seven other musicians, and released an album in 1999 of instrumental works, each a classical interpretation of a Jimi Hendrix song. “Purple Haze” was one of the tracks, and this performance, with the Polish Chamber Orchestra, showcases Nigel Kennedy’s impr...

The Jimi Hendrix Experience was an American-English rock band that formed in Westminster, London, in September 1966. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jimi Hendrix, drummer Mitch Mitchell, and bassist Noel Redding comprised the group, which was active until June 1969. During this time, they released three studio albums and became one of the most popular acts in rock. Highly influential in the popularization of hard rock and psychedelic rock, the Experience was best known for the skill, style, and charisma of their frontman, Jimi Hendrix. All three of the band's studio albums, Are You Experienced (1967), Axis: Bold as Love (1967) and Electric Ladyland (1968), were featured in the top 100 of the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, at positions 15, 82 and 54 respective...
