"Nevsky Prospect" (Russian:Невский Проспект) is a short story by Nikolai Gogol, written between 1831 and 1834, and published in 1835.
Summary
Influenced strongly by the Sentimental movement, the protagonist of "Nevsky Prospekt" is a pathetic and insignificant romantic, the narrator is chatty and unreliable, (along the lines of Tristram Shandy, the definitive Sentimental novel) and realism dominates. The story is organized symmetrically; the narrator describes Nevsky Prospekt in great detail, then the plot splits to follow in turn two acquaintances, each of whom follows a beautiful woman whom he has seen on the street. The first story follows the romantic hero, the second follows his realistic foil. The story closes with the narrator once more speaking generally of Nevsky Prospekt.
The introduction describes Nevsky Prospekt, the central avenue of St. Petersburg, and its population at different times of the day. The narrator revels in the delights of the street, but he is filled with Poshlost, a Russian concept akin to kitsch, defined by Russian-English historian [D.S. Mirsky] as "self-satisfied inferiority." This is exemplified in the repeated admiring descriptions of mustaches, "to which the better part of a life has been devoted." The description of the street ends abruptly, and the story shifts to the conversation of two acquaintances who have decided to split up to each pursue a different woman seen on the street.
The station was opened on July 1, 1963. While the station itself was designed by Mayofis and Maximov, the interior was designed by Getskin, Shuvalova and Andreyev. The station has two sets of exits on Mikhailovskya Street.
The station is linked to Gostiny Dvor via a transfer corridor that descends to the middle of the platform and a set of escalators at the platform's northern end.
Nevsky Prospekt is considered one of the most congested stations in the entire Saint Petersburg Metro.
Nevsky Prospekt is a cityscape painting by Gleb Savinov (Russian:Глеб Александрович Савинов)(1915-2000), Russian painter and art educator, a member of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists (before 1992 the Leningrad branch of Union of Artists of Russian Federation), who lived and worked in Saint Petersburg (former Leningrad), regarded as one of the leading representatives of the Leningrad School of Painting most famous for his genre and portrait painting. The cityscape depicts the life of the main street of Leningrad in summer day of the mid-1980s.
History
This painting continued lyrical series of works devoted to Leningrad, which artist began thirty years ago. Savinov as painter always attracted not everyday life as such, but the problems of showing of people and objects in their environment, which gives a special deep of meaning, coloristic and emotional picture of the entire composition. Nevsky Prospect has always been a sensitive barometer of the state of society. This painting truthfully and some ironically show the atmosphere of anticipation and a lively crowd, which are specific not only for this part of the Nevsky Prospect before exit the Palace Square, but also for the mid-1980s in general.

Prospettiva Nevski

com'è difficile trovare l'alba dentro l'imbrunire.
E il mio maestro mi insegnò
com'è difficile trovare l'alba dentro l'imbrunire...
Nevski Prospect
A thirty degree below zero wind,
unchallenged over empty squares and against steeples,
at times like bursts of machine-gun fire
it disintegrated snowbanks...
And all around Red Guards' fires lit to drive away wolves
and old women with rosary beads.
And all around Red Guards' fires lit to drive away wolves
and old women with rosary beads.
Sitting on the steps of a church
we used to wait for the Mass to end and women to get out.
Then absent-mindedly we used to watch
the artificial gracefulness of Nijinsky.
And then his impresario fell deeply in love with him
and with Russian Ballet.
And then his impresario fell deeply in love with him
and with Russian Ballet.
Wintertime with my generation,
women hunched over their handlooms near the windows.
One day at Nevski Prospect
I ran into Igor Stravinsky.
And urinals placed under the bed for the night
and a film of Eisenstein on revolution.
And urinals placed under the bed for the night
and a film of Eisenstein on revolution.
We used to study in a closed room
by the dim light of candles and oil lamps,
and when it came to making conversation
we always looked forward to it.
And my master taught me
how hard it is to find dawn in the twilight.
And my master taught me
how hard it is to find dawn in the twilight.
