Nevado de Toluca (Spanish: ne'βado de to'luka) is a large stratovolcano in central Mexico, located about 80 kilometres (50mi) west of Mexico City near the city of Toluca. It is generally cited as the fourth highest of Mexico's peaks, after Pico de Orizaba, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, although by some measurements, Sierra Negra is slightly higher.
Etymology
It is often called by the Nahuatl name Xinantecatl which is usually translate as The Naked Lord, Señor Desnudo in Spanish, although other etymologies have been suggested such as "Lord of the Corn Stalks", Tzinacantecatl or Zinacantepec (Mountain of the Bats). Recently other evidence regarding the etymologies of this mountain have surfaced and after many archeology discoveries in and around the area. It has been concluded that its correct etymology is Chicnauhtecatl meaning "nine lakes" as the top of the cone has various deep lakes.
Description
The volcano has a 1.5 kilometres (0.93mi) wide summit caldera which is open to the east. The highest summit, 4,680 metres (15,354ft)Pico del Fraile (Friar's Peak), is on the southwest side of the crater and the second highest, 4,640 metres (15,223ft) Pico del Aguila (Eagle's Peak), is on the northwest. There are two crater lakes on the floor of the basin at about 4,200m (13,800ft), the larger Lago del Sol (Sun Lake) and the smaller, but deeper, Lago de la Luna (Moon Lake). A road formerly ran into the caldera to the lakes, making this perhaps the most accessible major Mexican peak. The road is now gated 2km before the lakes.
Toluca[toˈluka], officially called Toluca de Lerdo[toˈluka ðe ˈlerðo], is the state capital of State of Mexico as well as the seat of the Municipality of Toluca. It is the center of a rapidly growing urban area, now the fifth largest in Mexico. It is located 63 kilometres (39mi) west-southwest of Mexico City and only about 40 minutes by car to the western edge of the Distrito Federal. According to the 2010 census, the city of Toluca has a population of 819,561. The city is the fifth largest in Mexico in population. The municipality of Toluca, along with thirteen other municipalities, make up the metropolitan population of 1,775,337 in Greater Toluca as of 2009, making it the fifth most populous metropolitan area in Mexico.
Name
When Toluca was founded by the Matlatzincas, its original name was Nepintahihui (land of corn, tierra del maíz). The current name is based on the Náhuatl name for the area when it was renamed by the Aztecs in 1473. The name has its origin in the word tollocan that comes from the name of the god, Tolo, plus the locative suffix, can, to denote "place of Tolo". It is also referred to in a number of Azteccodices as Tolutépetl, meaning hill of the god, Tolo, an allusion to the nearby volcano. The name Toluca de Lerdo was adopted in 1861 in honor of PresidentSebastián Lerdo de Tejada.
It probably fell more than 10000 years ago.
For centuries, Mexican people living near the meteorites, used them as a source of metal for various tools. It was discovered by conquistadores in 1776.
This iron meteorite is a coarse octahedrite, chemical type IAB-sLL.
The mean composition is 91% Fe and 8,1% Ni.
It often contains large troilite inclusions.
Nevado (1813? – 1821) was a Mucuchies dog that was given to Simón Bolívar by the local people of Mucuchíes, Mérida, in the VenezuelanAndes. It was given as a kind of present shortly after the Battle of Niquitao during his triumphal Admirable Campaign from New Granada (today Colombia) to Caracas in 1813. Bolivar's army was approaching a farm when the independence fighters were stopped in their tracks by a giant, barking guard dog. Weapons drawn, the rebels were about to kill the dog when Bolivar, marveling at its beauty and bravery, ordered them to back down. Nevado always ran beside Bolívar’s horse, no matter if he traveled through cities or battlefields. Nevado died in the Battle of Carabobo on June 24, 1821. When Bolívar received news that Nevado was badly injured, he rushed to the dog, but he came too late.
