Archaeologists study human prehistory and history, from the development of the first stone tools at Lomekwi, eastern Africa, 3.3 million years ago up until recent decades. Archaeology as a field is distinct from the discipline of paleontology, the study of fossil remains. Archaeology is particularly important for learning about prehistoric societies, for whom there may be no written records to study. Prehistory includes over 99% of the human past, from the Paleolithic until the advent of literacy in societies across the world. Archaeology has various goals, which range from understanding culture history to reconstructing past lifeways to documenting and explaining changes in human societies through time.
Archeologists uncover rare, expensive blue shrine in Pompeii
The biggest archaeological dig in years in the ancient Italian city of Pompeii is turning up clues about how people lived before the city was buried in volcanic rock. A newly discovered banquet hall, ornate shrine and artwork show the sophistication and elegance of the Pompeians. NBC’s Kelly Cobiella reports for TODAY.

Awful Archaeology Ep. 1: The Oldoway Man
In this episode of Awful Archaeology I discuss the skeleton of the Oldoway Man; a mysterious homo sapien unearthed in the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. This find baffled archaeologists like Hans Reck and Louis Leaky due to it being found in a middle Pleistocene bed. Since its deposition should have indicated the find was around a million years old, both archaeologists worked tirelessly to figure out what this mostly modern human was doing in such an ancient deposit.

This 2024 UPDATE of Gobekli Tepe is genuinely shocking and disturbing.
