In Canada, the police board is charged with overseeing a territorial police department - the term is also used for the same function in Scotland. Every municipality in Canada that operates their own police force is required to establish such a board. The legislation of Police Boards is in the jurisdiction of each provincial legislature.
British Columbia, Canada
All municipalities with a population over 5,000 are required by the British Columbia Police Act to provide for a police service. Municipalities in this category have two options: contract with the provincialgovernment for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or create an independent local police agency or department.
Municipalities that choose to operate an independent police force are required to create a civilian oversight body called a "Police Board". Members of the police board are civilian members of the community and are appointed by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General through an Order in Council. A police board usually has between five and eight members, depending on the size of the municipality. The Mayor of the municipality is, by law, automatically the Chairperson of the board. One other member of board is usually nominated by the municipality to represent the municipality's interest. Board members are selected from a variety of backgrounds and are usually appointed for one or two year terms. They may be re-appointed to a maximum of six years service. Except for the Mayor, municipal councillors may not be appointed to the municipality's police board.
The National Nicaraguan Police Force (La Policía Nacional Nicaragüense) is the national police of Nicaragua. The force is in charge of regular police functions and, at times, works in conjunction with the Nicaraguan military, making it an indirect and rather subtle version of a gendarmerie. However, the Nicaraguan National Police work separately and have a different established set of norms than the nation's military.
History
The National Police of Nicaragua came from the popular breast. Its training began in July 1979 after the overthrow of the National Guard, the armed wing of the Somoza dictatorship. Junta of National Reconstruction decreed on 22 August of that year, the Fundamental Statute of the Republic of Nicaragua in its Art. 23 declares dissolved the National Guard, the Office of Homeland Security and Military Intelligence Service and the laws of the country.
The institution was officially born on September 5 of that year under the name of the Sandinista Police, however, was up in 1980 with the Decree 559 establishing the "Act Jurisdictional Functions of the Sandinista police."
The 1986 organic law unifying the separate uniformed and plainclothes branches of the national police was a major reform that required a considerable period of time to be brought into full effect. The former plainclothes service, known as the Superior de Policía (Higher Police Force), but often referred to as the "secret police," consisted of some 9,000 officers. Prior to 1986, it had a supervisory and coordinating role in police operations, conducted domestic surveillance, collected intelligence, investigated major crimes, issued identity documents, and carried out liaison with foreign police forces.
The Swedish National Police Board (Swedish:Rikspolisstyrelsen, abbreviated RPS) was the central administrative authority for the police in Sweden from 1 January 1965 to 1 January 2015, when the Swedish Police Authority was established. The Swedish police used to consist of the National Police Board and 21 local police authorities, with their geographical areas of responsibility divided along county lines. The board was led by the National Police Commissioner and its main responsibilities were administration, coordination and supervision of the Swedish police. It also acted as the superordinate authority for the National Laboratory of Forensic Science. The Swedish National Criminal Police — sometimes also referred to as the Swedish National Bureau of Investigation — used to be a constituent part of the National Police Board, together with the Swedish Security Service. The Swedish Security Service formed its own agency post-reorganization, and most of the tasks handled by the National Criminal Police have been taken over by the National Operations Department.

BODYCAM: Police Advisory Board Member Accuses Officer of Racial Profiling
Bodycam footage released by the Mayor of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania shows a traffic stop that led to a local police advisory committee board member accusing an officer of racial profiling on August 13. The Wilkes-Barre Police Department said officer Dan Duffy pulled Darlene Duggins-Magdalinski over for suspicious window tints and cited her for multiple violations, including no proof of insurance and allowing her daughter to drive her vehicle and suspended license. Duggins-Magdalinski filed a formal complaint, citing racial profiling and claiming she was threatened. The allegations against officer Duffy were dismissed after being deemed baseless by bodycam video from the incident. Duggins-Magdalinski resigned from the board after members voted to oust her on September 3.

The Vancouver Police Board has approved the 2023 budget request from the city’s police department. If city council accepts, it could mean higher taxes for Vancouverites. Kier Junos has the details.

The Town of Kenly is without a police department. Every officer has resigned from their position. The town is being patrolled by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to 113 calls of service since stepping in from Aug. 3-8. People who live in the small town showed up Monday for the first town council meeting since losing all its officers. Residents came to the meeting with questions and concerns. Most of their comments to the council centered on public safety.

Elliot Eastman, 26, moved from Vermont to Sibuco in the Philippines 5 months ago. He married a local woman and opened a small business in the community. But national police believe Eastman was targeted by armed criminals, who killed him during an attempted kidnapping. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber takes a look at the tragic decline of Eastman’s circumstances, chronicled online, with retired NYPD detective Tom Smith.

The first ever online training for Kenya's National Police Service was jointly developed in 2020 to address the unique challenges police officers were facing in enforcing law and order during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The training is the result of collaboration between the NPS, European Union and UNODC - the Regional Office for Eastern Africa and Global eLearning Platform. Developed through the Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery in Kenya (PLEAD), the mandatory course comprises seven e-learning modules that police officers can complete at their own pace on a
computer, tablet or smart phone.
