"11th October" - Macedonian National Liberation in WW2
10.10.07
Macedonia celebrates the 66th anniversary since the start of the National-Liberation War against the fascist occupation:
On 11th of October, 1941 the Macedonian People rose against the fascist occupation by Nazi-Germany, Bulgaria, Italy and Albania in Macedonia. This liberation uprising evolved later in the Macedonian State of 1944.
During World War II (1941-1945), ethnic Macedonians took part in the anti-fascist coalition for creating their own state Macedonia, respecting the promise from the Atlantic charter that all nations who take part in the struggle against fascism shall choose their own form of government and shall be afforded "the means of dwelling in safety within their own boundaries, and which will afford assurance that all the men in all lands may live out their ...

History of North Macedonia
The history of North Macedonia encompasses the history of the territory of the modern state of North Macedonia.
Ancient period
In antiquity, most of the territory that is now North Macedonia was included in the kingdom of Paeonia, which was populated by the Paeonians, a people of Thracian origins, but also parts of ancient Illyria, Ancient Macedonians populated the area in the south, living among many other tribes and Dardania, inhabited by various Illyrian peoples, and Lyncestis and Pelagonia populated by the ancient Greek Molossian tribes. None of these had fixed boundaries; they were sometimes subject to the Kings of Macedon, and sometimes broke away.
In the late 6th century BC, the Achaemenid Persians under Darius the Great conquered the Paeonians, incorporating what is today North Ma...

STORYLINE:
The northern Macedonian village of Ratae, on the outskirts of Tetovo, was quiet on Monday following a night of heavy fighting between government forces and ethnic Albanian rebels.
Residents say they came under attack from the rebels for six hours.
They say the Macedonian police and soldiers saved the village, located five kilometres (3.1 miles) from Tetovo, from destruction.
But the rebels claim the fighting was started by government forces.
No casualties have been reported.
The violence came ahead of a visit by NATO's (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) supreme allied commander in Europe, General Joseph Ralston, who will assess whether it is safe to send thousands of NATO troops into Macedonia.
The British-led mission, dubbed Operation Essential Harvest will gather weapons voluntarily handed in by the rebels, known as the National Liberation Army
Hours before the cease-fire violation, Ali Ahmeti, the National Liberation Army political leader, insisted his rebel group will surrender all its weapons and disband, saying the time had come to work for peace.
The rebels say their struggle, which began six months ago, is meant to give more rights for minority ethnic Albanians in Macedonia.
The government says the insurgents are fighting for territory.

SUMMARY
=======
World War II in Yugoslav Macedonia started with the Axis occupation of Yugoslavia. Macedonian communist Partisans of the People's Liberation Army of Macedonia, part of the Yugoslav Partisan movement, started a political and military campaign on 11 October 1941 to resist the occupation of Vardar Macedonia by Bulgarian, German, Italian, and Albanian forces. Officially, the area was called then Vardar Banovina, because the very name Macedonia was prohibited in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.Initially it had no real success, starting to grow only in 1943 with the capitulation of Italy and the Soviet victories over Nazi Germany. The role of the Bulgarian communists, which avoided organizing mass armed resistance, was also a key factor. Their influence over the Macedonian Party organization remained dominant until the spring of 1943 when Tito's special emissary Svetozar Vukmanović arrived in Macedonia. This led to the rise of younger generation anti-Bulgarian oriented partisan leaders, who were loyal to Yugoslavia. In the western part of the area, the Albanian Partisans also participated in the resistance movement.
After Bulgaria switched sides in the war in September 1944, the Bulgarian 5th. Army stationed in Macedonia, moved back to the old borders of Bulgaria. In the early October the newly formed Bulgarian People's Army together with the Red Army reentered occupied Yugoslavia to blocking the German forces withdrawing from Greece. Vardar Macedonia was liberated in end of November when communist Yugoslavia was established.
The operation was called the National Liberation War of Macedonia (Macedonian: Народноослободителна борба на Македонија, Narodnoosloboditelna borba na Makedonija) by the Partisans, in line with the greater Yugoslav People's Liberation War, but combatants also developed further aspirations over the geographic region of Macedonia. It marked the defeat of Bulgarian nationalism and the victory of Macedonism in the area.

Macedonia celebrates the 66th anniversary since the start of the National-Liberation War against the fascist occupation:
On 11th of October, 1941 the Macedonian People rose against the fascist occupation by Nazi-Germany, Bulgaria, Italy and
Albania in Macedonia. This liberation uprising evolved later in the Macedonian State of 1944.
During World War II (1941-1945), ethnic Macedonians took part in the anti-fascist coalition for creating their own state Macedonia, respecting the promise from the Atlantic charter that all nations who take part in the struggle against fascism shall choose their own form of government and shall be afforded "the means of dwelling in safety within their own boundaries, and which will afford assurance that all the men in all lands may live out their lives in freedom from fear and want".
As a result, on 11 October 1941 in the Vardar part of Macedonia there was simultaneous uprising against the fascist occupation in Prilep and Kumanovo, where as in 1942 there were uprisings in the Aegean part of Macedonia (in Lerin and Kostur) headed by Lazo Trpovski and in the Pirin part of Macedonia (in Dupnica) headed by Nikola Parapunov. In spite of the lack of coordination, the intention was clear - liberation of the entire territory of Macedonia. However, only the people in the Vardar part managed to create a state in the face of the People's Republic of Macedonia within the framework of then Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. The ethnic Macedonians in the Pirin part of Macedonia were granted autonomy and certain cultural and ethnic rights in 1946, but these rights were revoked at the end of the decade at the height of the cold war. In the Aegean part of Macedonia there was a civil war in which the ethnic Macedonians took part hoping to acquire certain ethnic and cultural right, however at the end of the civil war hundreds of thousands of ethnic Macedonians were exiled and any show of ethnic Macedonian identity was banned.

In the late 6th century BC, the Achaemenid Persians under Darius the Great conquered the Paeonians, incorporating what is today North Macedonia within their vast territories. Following the loss in the Second Persian invasion of Greece in 479 BC, the Persians eventually withdrew from their European territories, including from what is today North Macedonia.
In 336 BC Philip II of Macedon fully annexed Upper Macedonia, including its northern part and southern Paeonia, which both now lie within North Macedonia. Philip's son
Alexander the Great conquered most of the remainder of the region, incorporating it in his empire, with exclusion of Dardania. The Romans included most of the Republic in their province of Macedonia, but the northernmost parts lay in Moesia; by the time of Diocletian, they had been subdivided, and the Republic was split between Macedonia Salutaris and Moesia prima. Little is known about the Slavs before the 5th century.

"Not especially."
Q: Can you elaborate why this isn't a very dangerous mission?
"Well, we don't know. We will see. At the beginning we will only get the weapons they will give voluntarily, that they want to give. So it shouldn't be a dangerous mission."

STORYLINE:
Three hundred and twenty five French Foreign Legion soldiers were ready on Wednesday morning to depart for Macedonia to help disarm ethnic-Albanian rebel fighters - the National Liberation Army (NLA).
Their preparations come as NATO announced that it has authorized the deployment of 3-thousand 500 troops to Macedonia.
The 2nd Regiment of French Legionnaires based in Nimes, along with an engineering crew, drivers and gendarmes boarded the amphibious ship Siroco at Toulon.
Captain Alain Walter said they did not feel it was a dangerous mission.
Another 100 French soldiers are ready to leave on a smaller amphibious ship.
It will take four days to sail to Thessalonika in Greece, the closest they can get to the theatre of operations.
From there the soldiers will make their way to Macedonia and meet up with a contingent of British soldiers and French reconnaissance troops.
A further 100 French soldiers and officers could leave in two military planes from Istres military base early this afternoon if necessary.
The total French contingent for Macedonia numbers over five hundred.

The military commander of NATO's Operation Essential Harvest in Macedonia, Major General Gunnar Lange, has said more than one-third of ethnic Albanian rebels' weapons have been collected by his force.
Lange said on Thursday he's given a letter to Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski informing him of the completion of the first phase of the weapon collection programme.
Now that a third of the arms have been voluntarily handed in, Macedonia's parliament is expected to begin on Friday debating political reforms for the benefit of the country's ethnic-Albanian population.
But reforms will not actually be enacted until all the rebels' weapons have been collected.
