The "origins" of Macedonians are varied and rich. In antiquity, much of central-northern Macedonia (the Vardar basin) was inhabited by Paionians who expanded from the lower Strymon basin. The Pelagonian plain was inhabited by the Pelagones, an Upper Macedonian peoples; whilst the western region (Ohrid-Prespa) was said to have been inhabited by Illyrian peoples. During the late Classical Period, having already developed several sophisticated polis-type settlements and a thriving economy based on mining, Paeonia became a constituent province of the Argead - Macedonian kingdom. Roman conquest brought with it a significant Romanization of the region. This Roman component would be ever-lasting. During the Dominate period, 'barbarian' federates were at times settled on Macedonian soil; such as the Sarmatians settled by Constantine (330s AD) or the (10 year) settlement of Alaric's Goths. In contrast to 'frontier provinces', Macedonia (north and south) continued to be a flourishing Christian, Roman province in Late Antiquity and into the early Middle Ages.
The Macedonians, also known as Macedonian Slavs or Slavic Macedonians are a South Slavic ethnic group native to the region of Macedonia. They speak the Macedonian language, a South Slavic language. About two thirds of all ethnic Macedonians live in the Republic of Macedonia and there are also communities in a number of other countries.

What on Earth Happened to the Macedonians?
Who exactly were the ancient Macedonians and what happened to their kingdom, lineage and descendants? Macedonia was one of the fiercest and most prominent of the ancient Hellenic kingdoms, ruled by none other than Alexander the Great, eventually going on to conquer nearly the entirety of the Persian Empire, but what happened to the Macedonians over the generations?
Today we'll be looking at a rather controversial subject for some, that being the position of ancient Macedonia as well as the modern Greek region of Macedonia and the Republic of Northern Macedonia (formerly known as Republic of Macedonia). This is not meant to be a controversial or offensive video, but I know saying this means absolutely nothing. Thanks for watching!

Political Macedonian Dance & Gaida in Greece | Recording Earth
This is something I (Olly) on my bicycle trip from London to Delhi. This was in Greece while cycling through the remote and rolling region of West Macedonia.
While trying to avoid the ferocious ankle-biting wild dogs who clearly believe bicycles are the devil’s work, I passed several police checkpoints and then a large ultra-nationalist demonstration. They were protesting a Macedonian circle-dance in a nearby village, where I incidentally had planned on camping. I decide to go to the venue hosting the dance, camera in hand, ambling through crowds of tense protesters outside. Sat on my own, receiving some bothersome looks, a lawyer came over and invited me to join his table. North Macedonia’s accession to the European Union has been delayed in the last two years due to disagreements with Bulgaria. The dispute centers around the identity of the Slavs in Macedonia and whether there is a istinctly Macedonian ethnicity and language.
Nonresident Senior Fellow Ilva Tare is joined in this episode of #BalkansDebrief by Petar Todorov a historian and a member of the Bilateral Multidisciplinary Expert Commission for Historical and Educational questions between Republic of North Macedonia and Republic of Bulgaria.
After 22 meetings of the joint Commission is a final agreement close? What are the chances of finding a “common ground” on historical narratives? Is it possible to adopt a pluralist view of history for north Macedonia and Bulgaria while maintaining the political legitimacy and national sovereignty? Why is the distinction between language and dialect so controversial between the two countries?

Millions of people around the world are without nationality. Many of them belong to an ethnic, religious or linguistic minority in the country where they have often lived for generations.
More than 75% of the world’s known stateless populations belong to minority groups. Discrimination, exclusion and persecution most commonly describe their existence.
This report explains the circumstances that have led to them not being recognized as citizens, drawing on discussions with four stateless or formerly stateless minority groups. The findings in this report underscore the critical need for minorities to enjoy the right to nationality.

His friends told me that they are exercising their ethnic right as Macedonian minorities by dancing to the gaida, a bagpipe from the Balkans.
Traditionally made from a treated sheep or goat’s hide, the gaida, unlike the Scottish Highland bagpipe which has five pipes, only has three: a ‘blowpipe’, a ‘charter’ and a ‘drone’. Bagpipes have existed for more than a millennium in Eurasia and Africa; in Galicia (Spain) they are called the gaita, and in Turkey the tulum.
After filming the dance, which ultimately transpired nonviolently, I was persuaded to have a boogie.

Guiding us through modern borders and nationalism in Greece and Macedonia we see two nations struggling in laying claim to the ancient past and its legacy.
From modern statues of Alexander the Great to political rallies that Dr. Kennedy saw throughout Greece she recounts this argument among the ancients, its complications and issues today that continue to be heatedly debated amongst academics and nationalists.

Thousands of people have marched through Skopje - rallying against a proposed compromise with Bulgaria that would allow North Macedonia to begin European Union membership talks.
North Macedonia has been a candidate for EU membership for 17 years. It has already changed its name to appease Greece, but is now being blocked by Bulgaria.
Last month, France drafted a proposal to amend North Macedonia's constitution to recognise a Bulgarian minority in the country.
Al Jazeera’s Jillian Wolf reports.

The Roma are the largest stateless minority in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Most have not had their births registered, making it difficult for them to access citizenship and basic rights. Mivtar Rustemov is a 47-year-old father. Six of his children remain unregistered.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the 'Macedonia is Greece' rally in the Greek capital, Athens, over the use of the term "Macedonia" by the neighbouring former Yugoslav Republic.
Greece will not allow Macedonia to become a member of NATO or the European Union without an agreement on the matter.
Both governments have signalled they are willing to compromise, but convincing their voters may be a more difficult matter.
Al Jazeera's John Psaropoulos looks at the background to the long-running dispute still to be resolved.

For the past 15 years, North Macedonia has been a candidate to join the European Union. Its application has recently made sudden progress in Brussels. In this small Balkan state, which went so far as to change its name to meet European criteria, what does the young generation think of the country's EU membership bid? Our reporters went to the capital Skopje to meet young Macedonians, who are torn between hope and disillusion over the European dream.

Add in invaders, from Macedonians and Mongols to Persians and British, plus a stirring melange of ethnic groups (Pashtuns, Tajiks, Turkmen, Uzbek and many more), and you have one hell of a place to eat.
