Today is World Statistics Day. We celebrate this day since 2010 every five years, since it was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.

Analysts expect inflation in Argentina to soar
On Friday, Argentina's National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) will issue the inflationary data for June. It´s estimated that the coming official figures will be alike to those in June, which showed a 4.2% inflation rate. However, these data counter the forecasts of those studying and analyzing these indexes, as well as with those citizens who perceive a different impact on the streets. teleSUR

The government of president Carlos Menem and a prominent candidate of the governing Peronist party disagree over recent government statistics which show an increase in poverty levels in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires and the suburban area.
The Home Secretary Carlos Corach says poverty is a worldwide phenomenon which is limited in Argentina. However, some say that poverty is spreading to other sectors which are unaccustomed to it - like the middle class.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
What is increasing is the new poor. The new poor are a middle class which is becoming increasingly poor, whose capacity to make a living is lessening. At the same time, there is a phenomenal concentration of wealth in the upper indices of the socio-economic pyramid.
SUPER CAPTION: Graciela Fernandez Meijide, Frepaso Party, Senator
The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) announced October survey results taken from the capital and in 19 Buenos Aires provinces.
The poll established that of the 11.5 million inhabitants that live in the area, 3.2 million live beneath the poverty line, a 12.5 per cent increase in relation to the average of October 1995.
According to the INDEC, some 400.000 people entered the poverty category in only 12 months, whilst the unemployment levels remain close to 17 per cent throughout the country.
INDEC set the poverty line according to the value of a basket of food made up of items selected for their ability to cover nutritional needs at a minimum cost. The families whose income cannot cover the cost of the basket are considered destitute.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
What we are concerned with is that the government reflects upon the policies they will back to resolve unemployment, poverty, misery, infant malnutrition, and education problems which are fundamental to the people's well-being.
SUPER CAPTION: Juan Pablo Baylac, Opposition Radical Civic Union deputy
While government officials say they doubt INDEC's figures, technicians at the Institute complain of government pressures when their statistics contradict optimistic official government statements on the socio-economic situation of the country.

Today is World Statistics Day. We celebrate this day since 2010 every five years, since it was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.
To commemorate statistics is to recognise the importance of their social utility, whether to plan public policies, analyse or research in the academic field and the private sector, or make better decisions when planning our life projects.
To understand Argentina's reality, we at INDEC have the challenge of constantly improving the social, demographic, economic and environmental indicators, as well as including new measurements to meet citizens' increasing information demands.
We do not do this alone. All of us who are part of the National Statistical System, the NSS, have adopted the good practice principles agreed by the international statistical community for this technical and professional work.
Do you know what these good practice principles are? Official statistics offices across the globe work together to set common guidelines for the different stages of data production, which are applied at each step of statistical development to guarantee data quality and transparency.
INDEC, as head of the NSS, coordinates and regulates the production and dissemination of public statistics through policies, rules, and quality standards.
Professional independence, the confidentiality principle, statistical secrecy, impartiality, objectivity, and the centrality of international cooperation are the basic principles of the rules that govern this task.
In particular, trust between the statistical office and the population is the key to obtaining accurate, timely and true data which are then processed and released as statistics to safeguard the confidentiality of sources.
A strong methodology, adequate statistical processes, requesting information in a manner that is not an excessive burden on people and companies, and adequate cost-effectiveness are the essential guidelines for this task.
But we must also produce public statistics that are relevant, coherent, and comparable over time, and across regions and countries.
To guarantee transparency throughout the production process, access is free and simultaneous for the whole population, because we all have the right to be informed in an accurate and timely manner.
This is what we do. This is what we are: The official statistics service of the Republic of Argentina.
Happy World Statistics Day! You help make statistics, too!
