9th Wonder has a smooth and soulful production style that relies on samples from artists such as Al Green and Curtis Mayfield. He attributes the bass lines that he uses in production to DJ Premier, Pete Rock and J Dilla, while he claims to have learned the sampling of "Wails and moans" from other works of music and where to position them in his songs from RZA.
Music career
9th Wonder's first significant career breakthrough came in 2003 when, as an up-and-coming producer, he released an unofficial remix album of Nas' 2002 album God's Son entitled God's Stepson. Released through internet outlets, the album garnered significant attention and acclaim. The producer has said that he was not thinking in terms of using it to generate a buzz or promote his skills at that point: "I never thought any of this of me as a producer was going to happen." The album has since been credited as starting the now regular trend for unofficial 'home-made' remixes of whole albums.
The track was released as the album's fourth and final single and peaked at number two in the Netherlands and number five in the United Kingdom due to heavy airplay of the Basement Jaxx remix - Elliott's second highest charting single in the UK to date, after Get Ur Freak On. The song also peaked at number eight in Denmark, and within the top forty of the charts in Germany, Switzerland, France and Sweden. A music video for the single was released in early March 2002.
The Basement Jaxx remix has been voted as one of 1001 Best Songs Ever by Q.
There was a short music video that was released as the remaining half of the video for Take Away. The short video features Elliott dancing with a big American crowd in honor of the 9/11 attacks.
My People is an album by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington written and recorded in 1963 for a stage show and originally released on Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label and later released on CD on the Red Baron label. The album features recordings of compositions by Ellington for a stage show presented in Chicago as part of the Century of Negro Progress Exposition in 1963.
Reception
The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 3 stars and stated "Ellington created music whose message of racial harmony remains timeless. Due to the high quality of the "Black, Brown and Beige" suite and the shorter originals, this interesting set is more enloyable than one might expect".
