Mozart - Requiem
Requiem Mass in D Minor
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's final Masterpiece was commissioned in mid 1791 by the Austrian count Franz Von Walsegg, as a Tribute to the passing of his young wife Anna. Mozart began his final composition in Prague, suffering from an undetermined illness, which would eventually take his life and rob him of the chance to see the completion of his Magnum Opus. After Mozart's death, his understudy 'Franz Xaver Süssmayr', at the behest of Mozart's wife, completed the missing parts of the Requiem.
Requiem Mass was first performed on January 2, 1793, in a private concert for the benefit of Mozart's grieving wife, Constanze Mozart.

Mozart - Requiem (Lacrimosa): A Divine Masterpiece
Mozart's "Requiem Mass in D minor, K. 626" is one of the most renowned and revered compositions in classical music history. It is a requiem mass, a musical composition typically used in Catholic funeral services, and Mozart's final work before his death in 1791.
The Requiem is known for its profound and transcendent beauty. It is divided into several sections, including the Introit, Kyrie, Dies Irae, Rex Tremendae, Confutatis, Lacrimosa, Domine Jesu, Hostias, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei, among others. Each section conveys a different aspect of the requiem mass, from prayers for the deceased to pleas for mercy and eternal rest.

Wolfgang A. Mozart: Requiem – Lacrimosa & Amen
newly edited and completed by *Michael Ostrzyga* ( @MichaelOstrzyga )
Recorded on July 1, 2022 at Berlin Philharmonic, Germany
In the 1960s, a sketch by Mozart of an Amen Fugue surfaced. It can be assumed that it was intended for the Requiem when Mozart wrote it down: Not only is there a sketch for the Rex tremendae and the Magic Flute on the same page, written like the Requiem in 1791, but there are also striking compositional references to the Introit. Moreover, Mozart did not work on any other work during this period in which the word "Amen" appears. The arrangement of the reeds in Mozart's manuscript, as has sometimes been pointed out, does indeed le...

Requiem Mass was first performed on January 2, 1793, in a private concert for the benefit of Mozart's grieving wife, Constanze Mozart.
The Following are the lyrics, translated from their Original Latin
Grant them eternal rest, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
You are praised, God, in Zion,
and homage will be paid to You in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer,
to You all flesh will come.
Grant them eternal rest, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Day of wrath, day of anger
will dissolve the world in ashes,
as foretold by David and the Sibyl.
Great trembling there will be
when the Judge descends from heaven
to examine all things closely.
The trumpet will send its wondrous sound
throughout earth's sepulchres
and gather all before the throne.
Death and nature will be astounded,
when all creation rises again,
to answer the judgment.
A book will be brought forth,
in which all will be written,
by which the world will be judged.
When the judge takes his place,
what is hidden will be revealed,
nothing will remain unavenged.
What shall a wretch like me say?
Who shall intercede for me,
when the just ones need mercy?
King of tremendous majesty,
who freely saves those worthy ones,
save me, source of mercy.
Remember, kind Jesus,
my salvation caused your suffering;
do not forsake me on that day.
Faint and weary you have sought me,
redeemed me, suffering on the cross;
may such great effort not be in vain.
Righteous judge of vengeance,
grant me the gift of absolution
before the day of retribution.
I moan as one who is guilty:
owning my shame with a red face;
suppliant before you, Lord.
You, who absolved Mary,
and listened to the thief,
give me hope also.
My prayers are unworthy,
but, good Lord, have mercy,
and rescue me from eternal fire.
Provide me a place among the sheep,
and separate me from the goats,
guiding me to Your right hand.
When the accused are confounded,
and doomed to flames of woe,
call me among the blessed.
I kneel with submissive heart,
my contrition is like ashes,
help me in my final condition.
That day of tears and mourning,
when from the ashes shall arise,
all humanity to be judged.
Spare us by your mercy, Lord,
gentle Lord Jesus,
grant them eternal rest. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,
liberate the souls of the faithful,
departed from the pains of hell
and from the bottomless pit.
Deliver them from the lion's mouth,
lest hell swallow them up,
lest they fall into darkness.
Let the standard-bearer, holy Michael,
bring them into holy light.
Which was promised to Abraham
and his descendants.
Sacrifices and prayers of praise, Lord,
we offer to You.
Receive them in behalf of those souls
we commemorate today.
And let them, Lord,
pass from death to life,
which was promised to Abraham
and his descendants.
Lamb of God, who takes away
the sins of the world,
grant them eternal rest.
Lamb of God, who takes away
the sins of the world,
Grant them eternal rest.
Lamb of God, who takes away
the sins of the world,
grant them eternal rest forever.
Let eternal light shine on them, Lord,
as with Your saints in eternity,
because You are merciful.
Grant them eternal rest, Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them,
as with Your saints in eternity,
because You are merciful.

The arrangement of the reeds in Mozart's manuscript, as has sometimes been pointed out, does indeed leave far too little space for an extensive fugue at this point, but the exchange and insertion of further reeds was common and also occurred in Mozart's work. It is surely no coincidence that in the years immediately before his death Mozart devoted himself to Handel's Messiah, which concludes with an extended Amen fugue. For the overall architecture of the Requiem, such an Amen Fugue, roughly in the middle of the work, can form a supporting pillar which, together with the pillars at the beginning and end of the work, Kyrie and Cum sanctis tuis, forms a great arched architecture. In the Amen Fugue, which was realised for the new edition, Mozart's view of Bach is particularly evident, partly because it is also very clear in the Kyrie Fugue.
It is impossible to imagine what Mozart would have invented, or perhaps had already invented. Nevertheless, the new addition was about the thought experiment of deducing the extent and nature of Mozart's instructions from everything that exists in someone else's hand. In this way, it is possible to derive - only incompletely, hypothetically, of course - instructions for completing the Requiem as a "whole", based on Mozart's presumed intentions in the form of general procedures, melodic material, contrapuntal constellations, harmonic progressions, instrumental accompaniments, concrete borrowings from older works by Mozart or Handel and Bach, and so on. Once I had uncovered this "composing backwards", I tried to compose the Requiem forwards again, starting from the music Mozart had written up to his death and the influences he bundled in the Requiem. _~ Michael Ostrzyga_

The genesis of Mozart's "Requiem" is shrouded in legend. The mysterious circumstances surrounding the commissioning of this work gave rise to a whole literature in the 19th century, and were embellished by a certain romanticism, whereas the real circumstances were soon perfectly well known.
Count von Walsegg-Stuppach, in Lower Austria, had the singular habit of auditioning works commissioned from foreign musicians and passing them off as his own. Thus, after the death of his wife in February 1791, he commissioned a Requiem from Mozart. Since, for obvious reasons, the Count wished to remain anonymous, he passed the commission on to an intermediary - either a chancellery employee of one of his friends, a lawyer in Vienna, or one of Walsegg's administrators. The latter would later appear in literature as the "messenger in gray" (der graue Bote). Without revealing the Count's identity, he immediately offered Mozart a fee of 50 ducats half his fee, which is said to have finally persuaded Mozart, in perpetual financial disarray, to accept the commission.
When Mozart died on December 5, 1791, only the "Requiem aeternam" and the Kyrie (no. 1) had been completed, as well as the vocal parts and basso continuo of the "Dies irae" sequence (nos. 2-7) up to the eighth bar of the "Lacrimosa", plus a few orchestral indications. The two Offertory pieces ("Domine Jesu" and "Hostias") were presented in the same way. The rest, namely the Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei and Communion "Lux aeterna", were completely missing. The fragmentary state of the work made it impossible for the widow to deliver it. So she asked Franz Xaver Süssmayr to complete it.
Süssmayr created the instrumentation for the Sequence and Offertory according to Mozart's indications, completed the "Lacrimosa" from the ninth bar onwards, and recomposed the last four parts, for which he probably had Mozart's sketches at his disposal. For the Communion, he referred to the Requiem and Kyrie. Finally, in order to present the work as homogeneously as possible, he copied the first two movements, which had already been completed, in their entirety. This copy still exists and bears the title "Requiem composto dal conte Walsegg". It was used on the day of the performance of "his" work, which he conducted in Wiener-Neustadt on December 14, 1793. Mozart was neither a religious composer nor a church musician. He was a universal composer to whom the Church offered the opportunity to express himself.
