Mount Baker Summit Climb - Washington State
Mount Baker, also known as Koma Kulshan, is the third tallest mountain in Washington. It is a thermally active volcano, with fumaroles venting sulfuric gases near the summit. Enormous glaciers blanket its slopes, which receive some of the highest snowfall totals in the world. This video takes you along the Heliotrope Ridge trail to our base camp and then along the Coleman Deming climbing route to the 10,718’ summit. This classic Northwest climb requires strength, ambition, and mountaineering skills. But for those that have what it takes, it is one in a lifetime experience that you will cherish forever.

The 1975 Mount Baker Incident; What Exactly Happened?
In 1975, large swaths of ground were closed around the Mount Baker volcano, and people were told to leave the area due to the possibility that a volcanic eruption might occur. As people looked upwards, a towering plume of white volcanic gasses rose into the sky, having not existed a mere two days beforehand. From a great distance, people were able to smell traces of the rotten egg smell, correlating to hydrogen sulfide in this gas plume. And yet, Mount Baker did not erupt in 1975. So, what exactly happened that year? This video will discuss three possibilities.

MUST DO Washington Day Hikes | Mt. Baker Wilderness
We spend 2 days hiking in the Mt Baker Wilderness area which offers incredibly rugged, beautiful and dramatic mountain views!
After some research we find that this area has SO many compelling hike options and after much deliberation and narrowing it down, we pick 2 short, afternoon hikes we are very excited for!
Day 1
We start with the Winchester Mountain Trail. This is a 4 mile round trip hike with roughly 1,300 feet of elevation gain. It is said to have one of the greatest rewards for the least amount of effort in the North Cascades. What's the catch you might ask? Well, the road to get there.
Unfortunately part of the road to get to the trailhead is not paved and is in pretty rough condition. A 4x4, high clearance vehicle is recommended and after our flat tire in North Cascades Nat...

What would happen if Mount Baker erupted?
With renewed interest following the eruption of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, geologists say the biggest threat from Pacific Northwest volcanoes like Mount Baker is not lava, but mud and debris flows.

Climbing Mount Baker in 2 Days | Easton Glacier Route
As a kid growing up in Bellingham, Washington, Mount Baker was on display every day the sun came out. In reality, this is only about once a week, because it rains so much.... Either way, as hikers and backpackers, we always considered climbing to the summit, but didn't have the gear or expertise required for the glacier crossings. This year, our friends Amy and Julie, who are avid mountaineers, reached out and asked if we wanted to make a summit attempt together!
The route we took was the Easton Glacier, which is about 2 hours from Seattle off of Highway 20. There were very few crevasses presenting danger at the end of May, but we could see the horizontal cracks of some starting to form.
After gathering all the necessary gear, including harnesses, cord for prusiks, locking and non-lock...

Beautiful Hikes Mount Baker: Heliotrope Ridge, Artist Point & Yellow Aster Butte
We spent 3 days and 2 nights day hiking in the Mount Baker Wilderness, which is part of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. We stayed in the Douglas Fir Campground and hiked the Heliotrope Ridge Trail, Huntoon Point at Artist Point, and the Yellow Aster Butte Trail. Add these gorgeous Washington state hikes to your list!
Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest spans 140 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Range and straddles the Canadian and US border all the way to the northern boundary of Mount Rainier National Park.
We recommend all three of these day hikes in Mount Baker and think they are some of the most beautiful hiking trails in Washington state, just 2 hours north of the Seattle area. We hiked these trails in the Mount Baker area around Labor Day in September an...

Mount Baker // Skiing the Coleman Deming Route in Winter
Mount Baker is an awesome mountain. The peak is that much more mind blowing when you can scale its heights on a sunny no wind day. You can see a lot of iconic landmarks from the summit of Baker. Glacier peak, Rainier, and Olympic National Park. If, and that’s a big if, you can catch it on a good day like we did. On this episode we climb and ski Mount Baker via the Coleman Deming route. Skiing from the summit to the car provides nearly 8,000 ft of descent. Snow conditions ranged from ice to 6 inches of light powder. Definitely a radical day with a little of everything.

A 4x4, high clearance vehicle is recommended and after our flat tire in North Cascades National Park, we err on the side of caution and park about 2 miles away from the trailhead.
So while we turn this 4 mile hike into an 8 mile hike, we have confidence it will still be worth it. Once we make it to the official trailhead, the hike begins between a pair of mile-high sub-alpine lakes. It switchbacks through blueberry bushes and there are already amazing views from the start that just get better and better as we climb.
It is an efficient trail and we make it to the top in .........
One of the last fire-lookouts in the region stands on the 6,521-foot summit. From the top, there are 360 degree views that are beautiful and dramatic to say the least.
Day 2
The next day we get started at Artist Point. There are a lot of hikes to choose from in this area and we make the short, 2.8 mile hike up to Table Mountain. It has around 700 feet of elevation gain, most of which is in the first section.
The trail starts with steep switchbacks (that are pretty exposed) but in a matter of 15 or so minutes, we make it up to the ridge. We follow along up and down the ridge until we make it to the peak.
Yesterday's hike was amazing to say the least, but the views from Table Mountain certainly rival it! From the summit, Mt Baker is SO CLOSE! There is also an awesome view of Shuksan and the weather is so clear today, we can see all the way to Mt Rainier.
We enjoy the views for a bit and then head back down to the parking lot because there is another spot we want to check out for sunset.
From Artist Point, we hike around 0.5 miles to Huntoon Point. This viewpoint gets us closer to Shuksan but also has a great view of Baker. We watch the sky put on a show as the sun sets behind Mount Baker. It really is the perfect way to end the day!

After gathering all the necessary gear, including harnesses, cord for prusiks, locking and non-locking caribiners, webbing for slings, ice axes, helmets, crampons, pulleys, and mountaineering packs, we were nearly set. Leading up to the climb, we also got in shape physically by climbing whatever we could around Seattle in the early summer, hikes like Mt. Si, Mailbox Peak, Mount Teneriffe, Tiger Mountain, and the Howe Street stairs in Seattle.
Praying for good weather, we arrived at the trailhead Memorial Day weekend. There was about 100 cars, parked far from the trailhead as snow still covered the road leading up. We saw a good number of skiers and backpackers, as there is no permit required to climb Baker.
The first day, our goal was to get to about 6200', set up camp, and sleep as much as we could before heading up to the summit in the dark. At our camp, we overheard some other huge groups saying they were waking up at 12, so we set our alarms for 11:45 in hopes of a little solitude on our climb. Aside from one other speedy hiker, we had the route to ourselves!
Climbing Mount Baker was a lifelong goal, and I'm so thankful to our friends for being willing to train us and prepare us for mountaineering. I feel we had everything we needed to be safe and comfortable, and would do it again in a heartbeat. Now every time I'm driving north on I-5 out of Seattle and can see the summit way off in the distance, the volcano has an even more special meaning to me.
Total hike:
16.3 Miles, 8000' Elevation gain.

We hiked these trails in the Mount Baker area around Labor Day in September and had awesome weather.
