The word Pali is used as a name for the language of the Theravada canon. According to the Pali Text Society's Dictionary, the word seems to have its origins in commentarial traditions, wherein the Pāli (in the sense of the line of original text quoted) was distinguished from the commentary or vernacular translation that followed it in the manuscript. As such, the name of the language has caused some debate among scholars of all ages; the spelling of the name also varies, being found with both long "ā" [ɑː] and short "a" [a], and also with either a retroflex[ɭ] or non-retroflex [l] "l"sound. Both the long ā and retroflex ḷ are seen in the ISO 15919/ALA-LC rendering, Pāḷi; however, to this day there is no single, standard spelling of the term, and all four possible spellings can be found in textbooks. R.C.Childers translates the word as "series" and states that the language "bears the epithet in consequence of the perfection of its grammatical structure".
Palić (Serbian: Палић or Palić, Hungarian: Palics, Croatian: Palić, Bunjevac: Palić, German:Palitsch) is a town in Serbia, 8 kilometres (5.0mi) from Subotica, and 18 kilometres (11mi) from the border between Serbia and Hungary. It is a part of the Subotica Municipality, North Bačka District, autonomous province of Vojvodina. The town has a Hungarian ethnic majority and its population numbering 7,745 people (2002 census). Many tourists come to Palić every year because of the Palić lake and spa. There are over 450 guest houses, and even a five-star hotel. It is known for its European film festival which takes place every summer. In 2008 the life achievement award was presented to the British film director Ken Loach.
The Palić lake covers an area of 380 hectares (940 acres), with a 17-kilometre (11mi) shore line. The average depth of the lake is 2 metres (6ft 7in), and there are lots of fish in it. In 1995 the Tisa-Palić canal was opened so that the lake would remain as healthy as it was before in spite of development around the lake.
Pali Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 25 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Rajasthan state in western India.
Assembly segments
Before the delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies in 2008, this Lok Sabha constituency comprised the following eight Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) segments:
Two major extant branches of Buddhism are generally recognized by scholars: Theravada ("The School of the Elders") and Mahayana ("The Great Vehicle"). Vajrayana, a body of teachings attributed to Indian siddhas, may be viewed as a third branch or merely a part of Mahayana. Theravada has a widespread following in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Mahayana which includes the traditions of Pure Land, Zen, Nichiren Buddhism, Shingon, and Tiantai (Tendai) is found throughout East Asia. Tibetan Buddhism, which preserves the Vajrayana teachings of eighth century India, is practiced in regions surrounding the Himalayas, Mongolia and Kalmykia. Buddhists number between an estimated 488 million and 535 million, making it one of the world's major religions.

What is Pali Language? A history | Learn Pāli Basics
In this introduction to the language we ask 'What is Pāli? What does it mean? & Where does it come from?' It investigates the meaning of the word itself, how it has become used to refer to a language, as well as the historical evidence for it and details the various theories for its origin. Finally it concludes by placing the language of Pali within general linguistic theory.
