In Beijing, wages are low and but rents have skyrocketed. Many Beijingers have few options left. And thus a strange underworld was born: long corridoors leading to tiny underground rooms, in basements originally designed as bomb shelters. They house a city within a city. And within this city, a tribe of people are forced to live like rats.

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://sc.mp/subscribe-youtube
Beijing’s population has grown rapidly in recent years, as migrants from all around China come to seek jobs. Urbanisation has led to economic growth for the city, but it has also brought in issues like traffic congestion and a housing shortage. To ease these pressures, the Chinese capital launched a massive campaign to drive out impoverished communities.
Mr. Wang, who asked us not to publish his full name, runs 4 hostels on the outskirts of Beijing for migrant workers. And he organizes a get-together dinner every year to celebrate the Lunar New Year with those who can’t go home for the traditional reunions with their families.
