Orlande de Lassus
Roland de Lassus (also Orlande de Lassus, Orlando di Lasso, Orlandus Lassus, or Roland de Lattre; 1532, possibly 1530 – 14 June 1594) was a Netherlandish or Franco-Flemish composer of the late Renaissance. He is today considered to be the chief representative of the mature polyphonic style of the Franco-Flemish school, and one of the three most famous and influential musicians in Europe at the end of the 16th century (the other two being Palestrina and Victoria).
Life
Lassus was born in Mons in the County of Hainaut, Habsburg Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). Information about his early years is scanty, although some uncorroborated stories have survived, the most famous of which is that he was kidnapped three times because of the singular beauty of his singing voice. At the age of twelve, he left the Low Countries with Ferrante Gonzaga and went to Mantua, Sicily, and later Milan (from 1547 to 1549). While in Milan, he made the acquaintance of the madrigalist Spirito l'Hoste da Reggio, a formative influence on his early musical style.

Requiem
A Requiem or Requiem Mass, also known as Mass for the dead (Latin: Missa pro defunctis) or Mass of the dead (Latin: Missa defunctorum), is a Mass in the Catholic Church offered for the repose of the soul or souls of one or more deceased persons, using a particular form of the Roman Missal. It is frequently, but not necessarily, celebrated in the context of a funeral.
Musical settings of the propers of the Requiem Mass are also called Requiems, and the term has subsequently been applied to other musical compositions associated with death and mourning, even when they lack religious or liturgical relevance.
The term is also used for similar ceremonies outside the Roman Catholic Church, especially in the Anglo-Catholic tradition of Anglicanism and in certain Lutheran churches. A comparable service, with a wholly different ritual form and texts, exists in the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, as well as in the Methodist Church.
The Mass and its settings draw their name from the introit of the liturgy, which begins with the words "Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine" – "Grant them eternal rest, O Lord". ("Requiem" is the accusative singular form of the Latin noun requies, "rest, repose".) The Roman Missal as revised in 1970 employs this phrase as the first entrance antiphon among the formulas for Masses for the dead, and it remains in use to this day.

Missa pro defunctis (Brumel)
Missa pro defunctis is a composition for four voices of the late Antoine Brumel, a Renaissance French composer. This work is notable for being the first Requiem setting to include an alternatim polyphonic setting of the Dies Iræ (a setting in which sections of plainchant alternate with sections in polyphony). In addition, it is one of the earliest surviving requiems (only Ockeghem's Missa pro defunctis is earlier.

Requiem (Ockeghem)
The Requiem, by Johannes Ockeghem (c.1410 – 1497), is a polyphonic setting of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass (the Missa pro defunctis, or Mass for the dead). It is probably the earliest surviving polyphonic setting of any requiem mass. It is unusual in that the movements vary greatly in style, and each uses a paraphrase technique for the original Gregorian chant. It has five parts for four voices and is one of Ockeghem's best known and most performed works.
The Requiem is often considered incomplete as it lacks a Sanctus, Communion or Agnus Dei. The closing movement, the Offertory, is the most complex. Blank opening sections in the Codex imply that there may have been another movement. The circumstances of its composition are unclear; it may have been composed for the funeral of Charles VII's in 1461; an alternative hypothesis is that it was written after the death of Louis XI in 1483.
The Requiem
This requiem is the earliest surviving polyphonic setting of the Requiem Mass, as a possibly earlier setting by Guillaume Dufay, written for use by the Order of the Golden Fleece, has not survived. It remains one of Ockeghem's most famous and often-performed compositions.

Biography
Coral Antiphona was created in 1995 by Mtro. Juan Belmonte, former conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Zulia, in Venezuela, with the purpose of having a stable group for the symphonic choral repertoire. In the present time, Antiphona acts as a nonprofit civil association of culture promotion. The choir has been conducted by Mtro. Juan Carlos Bersague from 1995 to 2008. From 2010, Antiphona Titular Conductor is Mtro. César Alejandro Carrillo.
In its curricular path, Antiphona has performed in several scenarios in Bulgaria, Colombia, Cuba, France, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela.

In the 1960s, a sketch by Mozart of an Amen Fugue surfaced. It can be assumed that it was intended for the Requiem when Mozart wrote it down: Not only is there a sketch for the Rex tremendae and the Magic Flute on the same page, written like the Requiem in 1791, but there are also striking compositional references to the Introit. Moreover, Mozart did not work on any other work during this period in which the word "Amen" appears. The arrangement of the reeds in Mozart's manuscript, as has sometimes been pointed out, does indeed leave far too little space for an extensive fugue at this point, but the exchange and insertion of further reeds was common and also occurred in Mozart's work. It is surely no coincidence that in the years immediately before his death Mozart devoted himself to Handel's Messiah, which concludes with an extended Amen fugue. For the overall architecture of the Requiem, such an Amen Fugue, roughly in the middle of the work, can form a supporting pillar which, together with the pillars at the beginning and end of the work, Kyrie and Cum sanctis tuis, forms a great arched architecture. In the Amen Fugue, which was realised for the new edition, Mozart's view of Bach is particularly evident, partly because it is also very clear in the Kyrie Fugue.
It is impossible to imagine what Mozart would have invented, or perhaps had already invented. Nevertheless, the new addition was about the thought experiment of deducing the extent and nature of Mozart's instructions from everything that exists in someone else's hand. In this way, it is possible to derive - only incompletely, hypothetically, of course - instructions for completing the Requiem as a "whole", based on Mozart's presumed intentions in the form of general procedures, melodic material, contrapuntal constellations, harmonic progressions, instrumental accompaniments, concrete borrowings from older works by Mozart or Handel and Bach, and so on. Once I had uncovered this "composing backwards", I tried to compose the Requiem forwards again, starting from the music Mozart had written up to his death and the influences he bundled in the Requiem. _~ Michael Ostrzyga_

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's final Masterpiece was commissioned in mid 1791 by the Austrian count Franz Von Walsegg, as a Tribute to the passing of his young wife Anna. Mozart began his final composition in Prague, suffering from an undetermined illness, which would eventually take his life and rob him of the chance to see the completion of his Magnum Opus. After Mozart's death, his understudy 'Franz Xaver Süssmayr', at the behest of Mozart's wife, completed the missing parts of the Requiem.
Requiem Mass was first performed on January 2, 1793, in a private concert for the benefit of Mozart's grieving wife, Constanze Mozart.

We dedicate this Gregorian chant with much love to all our brothers and sisters who have yet to undergo their final purification after death. We hope that it will comfort them and that our Father will soon welcome them into the Kingdom of His glory as His beloved children.
We are honoured to have been able to record this video in the "Valley of the Fallen" (Valle de los caídos), where a great number of martyrs and victims of the Spanish Civil War from both sides are buried, and where the highest cross in the world has been erected. We ask all our listeners to join in prayer for this Benedictine abbey, that the monks may continue their valuable service there without hindrance, for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

In the 1960s, a sketch by Mozart of an Amen Fugue surfaced. It can be assumed that it was intended for the Requiem when Mozart wrote it down: Not only is there a sketch for the Rex tremendae and the Magic Flute on the same page, written like the Requiem in 1791, but there are also striking compositional references to the Introit. Moreover, Mozart did not work on any other work during this period in which the word "Amen" appears. The arrangement of the reeds in Mozart's manuscript, as has sometimes been pointed out, does indeed leave far too little space for an extensive fugue at this point, but the exchange and insertion of further reeds was common and also occurred in Mozart's work. It is surely no coincidence that in the years immediately before his death Mozart devoted himself to Handel's Messiah, which concludes with an extended Amen fugue. For the overall architecture of the Requiem, such an Amen Fugue, roughly in the middle of the work, can form a supporting pillar which, together with the pillars at the beginning and end of the work, Kyrie and Cum sanctis tuis, forms a great arched architecture. In the Amen Fugue, which was realised for the new edition, Mozart's view of Bach is particularly evident, partly because it is also very clear in the Kyrie Fugue.
It is impossible to imagine what Mozart would have invented, or perhaps had already invented. Nevertheless, the new addition was about the thought experiment of deducing the extent and nature of Mozart's instructions from everything that exists in someone else's hand. In this way, it is possible to derive - only incompletely, hypothetically, of course - instructions for completing the Requiem as a "whole", based on Mozart's presumed intentions in the form of general procedures, melodic material, contrapuntal constellations, harmonic progressions, instrumental accompaniments, concrete borrowings from older works by Mozart or Handel and Bach, and so on. Once I had uncovered this "composing backwards", I tried to compose the Requiem forwards again, starting from the music Mozart had written up to his death and the influences he bundled in the Requiem. _~ Michael Ostrzyga_

Orlande de Lassus
Roland de Lassus (also Orlande de Lassus, Orlando di Lasso, Orlandus Lassus, or Roland de Lattre; 1532, possibly 1530 – 14 June 1594) was a Netherlandish or Franco-Flemish composer of the late Renaissance. He is today considered to be the chief representative of the mature polyphonic style of the Franco-Flemish school, and one of the three most famous and influential musicians in Europe at the end of the 16th century (the other two being Palestrina and Victoria).
Life
Lassus was born in Mons in the County of Hainaut, Habsburg Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). Information about his early years is scanty, although some uncorroborated stories have survived, the most famous of which is that he was kidnapped three times because of the singular beauty of his singing voice. At the age of twelve, he left the Low Countries with Ferrante Gonzaga and went to Mantua, Sicily, and later Milan (from 1547 to 1549). While in Milan, he made the acquaintance of the madrigalist Spirito l'Hoste da Reggio, a formative influence on his early musical style.
