Metheny was born and raised in Lee's Summit, Missouri, a suburb southeast of Kansas City. At age 15, he won a Down Beat scholarship to a one-week jazz camp and was taken under the wing of guitarist Attila Zoller. Zoller also invited the young Metheny to New York City to see the likes of Jim Hall and Ron Carter. Following his graduation from Lee's Summit High School, Metheny briefly attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida in 1972, where he was quickly offered a teaching position. He then moved to Boston to take a teaching assistantship at the Berklee College of Music with jazz vibraphonistGary Burton. He first made his name as a teenage prodigy under the wing of Burton.
In 1974 he made his recording debut on two sessions for pianist Paul Bley and Carol Goss' Improvising Artists label, along with fretless electric bassist Jaco Pastorius.

Midwestern Night's Dream - Bright Size Life
From Pat Metheny's album Bright Size Life. Jaco Pastorius performs what in my opinion is the most lyrical bass line and solo ever played.

Midwestern Nights Dream (Pat Metheny)
This is an arrangement of Pat Metheny's Midwestern Nights Dream.
The song was first released on Pat's first solo album "Bright Size Life" in 1976. It was re-recorded for the album "Passengers" by Gary Burton Quartet. In Burton's album the song was titled "B & G".
Jaco Pastorius played the bass in the original recording, the arrangement I did includes his solo in the upper register.

Is This Classic Jaco Solo EVEN A SOLO?!
#bass #basshistory #analysis #transcription #basssolo #paulthompson
Digging into one of my favorite and lesser known Jaco Pastorius solos from 1975's "Bright Size Life" album with Pat Metheny. I'll get into Jaco's career surrounding this session, analyze the solo itself, and answer a question I've had for years: can we even consider this a solo? I'll tell you why it's one of the most important things Jaco ever played and how he got his signature sound on it.
Many thanks to the great bassist Mark Egan for the assist on this one!

This Is Not America - The Song Words and music by David Bowie and Pat Metheny. This is not America, sha la la la la A little piece of you The little peace in me Will die [This is not a miracle] For this is not America Blossom fails to bloom This season Promise not to stare Too long [This is not America] For this is not the miracle There was a time A storm that blew so pure For this could be the biggest sky And I could have The faintest idea [For this is not America, sha la la la la, sha la la la la, sha la la la la This is not america, no, this is not, sha la la la la] Snowman melting From the inside Falcon spirals To the ground [This could be the biggest sky] So bloody red Tomorrow's clouds A little piece of you The little piece in me Will die [This could be a miracle] For this is not America There was a time A wind that blew so young For this could be the biggest sky And I could have the faintest idea [For this is not America, sha la la la la, sha la la la la, sha la la la la This is not america, no, this is not, sha la la la This is not america, no, this is not
