The Midland Highway (also known as the Midlands Highway) is one of Tasmania's major inter-city highways, running for 176 kilometres (109mi) between Hobart and Launceston. It is part of the AusLink National Network and is a vital link for road freight to transport goods to and from the two cities.
It represents a major north-south transportation corridor in Tasmania and has the route 1 designation as part of the National Highway.
The highway consists of various traffic lane arrangements, the most common being two lanes – one in each direction, with overtaking options and at-grade intersections. At both the Launceston and Hobart sections of the highway there are small portions of grade-separateddual carriageway.
History
Surveyor Grimes marked out the track from Hobart to Launceston in 1807, and Governor Macquarie followed the route in 1811 when he visited the colony accompanied by his wife. The party took five and a half days to complete the journey.
Macquarie again visited the colony in 1821, when the road was fit for a carriage, but his journal records many different sections, and it was not until 1831 that the first regular coach service was operated by J. E. Cox.
The Midland Highway (A300, B300, C518) links major towns in Victoria (south-eastern Australia), beginning from Geelong and leading all the way to Mansfield. It winds through country Victoria in a large arc, travelling via the towns of Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton. The total length of the highway is 452km.
Route number: A300 (previously State Route 149) from Geelong to Benalla; B300 (previously State Route 153) from Benalla to Barjarg; C518 from Barjarg to Mansfield.
The Midland Link Highway (B300, previously State Route Alt-153) links Barjarg (on the Midland Highway) and Maindample (on the Maroondah Highway), bypassing Mansfield and reducing the journey from Benalla to Alexandra by 19km.
A further, fragmented section of the highway that ran between the Princes Highway east of Morwell in the Latrobe Valley and Port Welshpool, on the South Gippsland Highway (previously State Route 190), was stripped of highway status in the 1980s.
My Rant about the State of the Midlands Highway in Tasmania
I did yet another trip up to the Northwest of our beautiful state of Tasmania only to be deeply frustrated yet again by the state of our major highway between our two cities of Hobart and Launceston. It feels like a never ending cycle!!! As a traveller to Tasmania please drive safely and maybe one day those who are in charge of our roads will do better and make your travel more enjoyable although I don't know when that may ever be.
I feel really sorry for the towns along the highway that are great places to visit but may be overlooked as people, us included, look for ways to avoid the road.

Driving down to Hobart on the Midland Highway somewhere in the middle near St Peters Pass I think, check out the second cars. I had to veer onto the dirt shoulder and boy did I swear!
