Connelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the second oldest child of W. Michael Connelly, a property developer, and Mary Connelly, a homemaker. According to Connelly, his father was a frustrated artist who encouraged his children to want to succeed in life and was a risk taker who alternated success with failure in his pursuit of a career. Connelly's mother was a fan of crime fiction and introduced her son to the world of mystery novels.
At age 12, Connelly moved with his family from Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School. At age 16, Connelly’s interest in crime and mystery escalated when, on his way home from his work as a hotel dishwasher, he witnessed a man throw an object into a hedge. Connelly, curious, decided to investigate and found that the object was a gun wrapped in a lumberjack shirt. After putting the gun back, he followed the man to a bar and then left to go home to tell his father. Later that night, Connelly brought the police down to the bar, but the man was already gone. This event introduced Connelly to the world of police officers and their lives, impressing him with the investigators’ hard faces and the way they worked.
Michael Connelly, CBE (1887–1970) was a New Zealand trade unionist, politician of the Labour Party, and a Member of the Legislative Council (upper house) from 1936 to 1950.
Biography
Born in Kakaramea in 1887, he was active in the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants as Secretary of the Thorndon (Wellington) branch 1914–1918 and national president 1923–1925.
He was a Dunedin City Councillor 1944–1947 and 1950–1959, and unsuccessfully contested the Dunedin mayoralty in 1956 and the Port Chalmers parliamentary electorate in 1925. He was a director of the Grey River Argus when it became a Labour newspaper.
He was a railway officer, i.e. a civil servant when he was appointed to the Legislative Council on 9 March 1936 by the first Labour Government, hence a special act, the Michael Connelly Appointment Validation Act 1936 (technically a private act) had to be passed to validate his appointment. His term ended on 8 March 1943, and he was reappointed the following day for another seven years. When his second term ended on 8 March 1950, the first National Government was in power and he was not reappointed. From 1948 until the end of his term in 1950, he was Chairman of Committees of the Legislative Council.
Born in 1843 in Brooksville, Maine, Connelly joined the Navy from that state. By March 5, 1865, he was serving as a seaman on the USSHendrick Hudson. On that day and the next, he accompanied a Union Army force during the Battle of Natural Bridge near St. Marks, Florida. He helped transport and fire a naval howitzer throughout the engagement despite heavy Confederate fire. For this action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor three months later, on June 22, 1865; the medal was issued under the name "John Mack". He was one of six sailors to receive the medal for manning artillery pieces during the battle, the others being Landsman John S. Lann, Seaman George Pyne, Ordinary Seaman Charles Read, Coxswain George Schutt, and Seaman Thomas Smith.
Connelly's official Medal of Honor citation reads:
"We want our government to protect us, to make sure something like 9/11 never happens again. We quickly moved to give law enforcement more power to do this. But that now begs the question, did we move to fast? Did we give too much power away? I don't have the answer."
"In a daydream sort of way, I think it would be pretty cool to direct a movie. But I have been on movie and TV sets and know it is hard work. I like directing it in my mind. It is easier."
"The bottom line is that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And I have to believe from past experience and knowledge that some of the links in Homeland Security are weak. Part of the story in "Lost Light" is about a weak link in the chain."
"I knew as I was writing "City of Bones" that this had to be the end of him as a cop and possibly even a character. But the bottom-line feeling when I was finished with that novel was that there was more I could do with Harry, things that would keep me plugged in and interested."
"I would change very little because I have been very, very fortunate. A lot of things fell into place for me simply by happenstance. When that happens you don't really want to change anything, even if you could. Editorially my regrets are few and for the most part minor. I look back on my first published book and think I held on to it too long, babied it too long."
"The Lincoln Lawyer"
"David Morrell is a master of suspense. He wields it like a stiletto - knows just where to stick it and how to turn it. If you're reading Morrell, you're sitting on the edge of your seat."
"When you surf, the ultimate goal is to get into a pipeline where the water circles around you and that's all there is. In writing, it's the same thing. You want to get into this pipeline where the story is circling around you and that's all there is. That is writing nirvana to me."
"When I started reading novels that really charged me or did something to me, that's when I started thinking that maybe I would like to build stories instead of houses."
"What I do now is I write fiction. I ground my fiction in the reality of a place called Los Angeles."
"I love movies. Movies have influenced me as a writer."
