_Art Basel’s ‘Meet the artists’ series presents contemporary creatives shaping today’s cultural landscape_
In this episode of ‘Meet the artists,’ we journey to Nairobi to meet Michael Armitage, a Kenya-born British painter whose work weaves together East African history, folklore, and current events with Western painting traditions. ‘I try not to be too defined and prescriptive over the type of subjects that I will engage with,’ he says in the film. ‘Often they are positions I don’t have a clear moral attitude on […] they’re points of contention.’ His subject matter, coupled with his vibrant palette and use of Lubugo bark cloth – a traditional cloth by the Baganda people of southern Uganda which Armitage uses as a canvas – result in narratively rich and visually complex works.

Painting overlooked stories from Kenya | Artist Michael Armitage | Louisiana Channel
“Part of what I’ve always loved from the process of making is engaging in the imagination”
Michael Armitage remembers from childhood how “the life of an artist” meant a life where “the imagination is important and where the consistency of the story isn’t what matters, but the journey of the story is perhaps what is more interesting”.
Michael Armitage intertwines his own memories with both Western and East African culture in his paintings, such as the rally in Nairobi during the 2017 election, which Armitage witnessed in person. These experiences later made their way into multiple paintings, such as ‘The Promised Land’ from 2019. A painting where Armitage also connects and reflects on the seductive ideology of the female nude in the history of painting, with the “very familiar seductive i...

Michael Armitage at White Cube on The Art Channel
Michael Armitage paints scenes drawn from life in Kenya where he grew up. These paintings have a lush and expressive quality, often making allusions to other painters such as Velasquez, Van Gogh and Gauguin. Making richly worked surfaces on bark cloth where the paint applied and then scraped back, Armitage invests his scenes with psychological tension and uncertainty.

Beyond his practice, Armitage actively fosters the growth of East African art. In 2020, he founded the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI), a non-profit that promotes contemporary art from the region. Through the institute, Armitage is committed to bringing Kenyan art to a broader audience and creating opportunities for emerging local artists. The endeavor mirrors the ethos of his work – a drive to challenge narratives, question norms, and explore the convergence of different cultures.
Michael Armitage is represented by White Cube (London, Hong Kong, Palm Beach, New York, Seoul) and David Zwirner (New York, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Paris). His exhibition ‘Pathos and the Twilight of the Idle’ will be on view at Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria from July 15 – October 29, 2023.

A painting where Armitage also connects and reflects on the seductive ideology of the female nude in the history of painting, with the “very familiar seductive ideologies” being used at such rallies with the aim to make people more fervent and emotionally engaged.
Armitage explains, “Often with political moments, they feel specific to a time, feel specific to you in your situation, like this is it, you know, but then the form of expression, the language is often something that is translated again. Not only across cultures but across times. You can find almost the same rhetoric being used to the same effect. So that was the land I was occupying in my mind when approaching the painting - ‘The Promised Land’”.
With numerous solo exhibitions at esteemed galleries and museums around the world, Michael Armitage, in a short time, has established himself as one of the most prominent and highly acclaimed voices of his generation.
Michael Armitage (b. 1984) is a Kenyan-born artist living and working in Nairobi and London. “All language and ideas from before led to that, and all paintings and ideas that came out afterward, you could see where they have roots in that single painting”. Armitage takes us through his formative encounters with art, such as the Pietà by Titan, which for Armitage, was a bottleneck painting of western art history.
The most important encounter with art was seeing Francisco Goya’s black paintings, as Armitage explains, “It totally blew my mind. I don’t think I have quite come to terms with that experience yet.”
Armitage also talks about the power of caricature, the significance of paint and the painted mark, and how distortion can be used to give something importance or less importance. Anna Ferrari discusses Michael Armitage’'s exhibition ‘'Paradise Edict’' at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 2021.
‘Paradise Edict’ is a series of paintings in which Armitage follows the effects of Kenya’s 2017 presidential election. Drawing on the works of contemporary East African and historical European painters, Armitage paints on Lubugo bark cloth, a natural material which when stretched taut has occasional holes and coarse indents.
Also included in the exhibition are figurative paintings by six East African artists whose works have profoundly impacted Armitage’s practice: Meek Gichugu, Jak Katarikawe, Theresa Musoke, Asaph Ng'ethe Macua, Elimo Njau and Sane Wadu.
