The McDonough School of Business (commonly abbreviated MSB) is one of the four undergraduate and one of the five graduate schools of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. It is named in honor of Georgetown alumnus Robert Emmett McDonough.
History
The school was founded in 1957 as an outgrowth of the School of Foreign Service. On October 7, 1998, the School of Business was renamed the McDonough School of Business in honor of alumnus Robert Emmett McDonough (F'49) after he made a gift of $30 million to the school.
The Rafik B. Hariri Building
In 2009 the McDonough School of Business moved into the newly constructed Rafik B. Hariri Building, named after the late Rafik Hariri, former Prime Minister of Lebanon and father of Georgetown alumnus Saad Hariri, also a former Prime Minister of Lebanon. The $82.5-million privately funded building opened in the summer of 2009. The new building includes 15 classrooms, eight case-style rooms, five tiered lecture rooms, and two flat-floor rooms; 34 breakout rooms complete with data ports, flat-screen video monitors, and white boards; separate undergraduate and graduate commons areas and lockers for graduate students; 120 faculty offices; 11 interview rooms within the Career Management Office; 15 conference rooms throughout the building; and a 400-seat auditorium, among other features.
There are several forms of business schools, including school of business, business administration, and management.
Most of the university business schools are faculties, colleges, or departments within the university, and teach predominantly business courses.
In North America, a business school is often understood to be a university program that offers a graduate Master of Business Administration degrees and/or undergraduate bachelor's degrees.
In 1875, Oslo Commerce School (Oslo Handelsgymnasium) was founded, the first business education institution in Norway.
In response to societal and industrial developments in Norway during the 1950s and 1960s, the school started working to expand its business education to college level: Oslo College of Business and Economics (Økonomisk College) was established in 1970 and offered a two-year undergraduate business degree from 1971. From 1977, the College offered a three-year program with specialization in Accounting and Auditing. From 1987, the College offered a three-year program with specialization in International Business.
In 1994, Oslo College of Business and Economics was moved from Oslo Commerce School, and instead incorporated as the business school of the newly formed Oslo University College (HiO). HiO then merged with Akershus University College (HiAK) in 2011 to form Oslo and Akershus University College (HiOA).
