Martha My Dear

"Martha My Dear" is a song by the Beatles written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney), which first appeared on the double album The Beatles (also known as The White Album). McCartney is the only Beatle to appear on this track.

Style and form

The song features a music hall-inspired piano line that recurs throughout the piece, as well as a brass section. The song modulates smoothly through several keys.

The song key is E-flat major, showing up embellished chords with jazzy sprinkled dissonances. The verse is a syncopated replicate of the first melodic section adding two extra beats, a technique similar to that used later by McCartney in “Two of Us”. Though the bridge is in the key of F major, the manner in which it abruptly sets in and exits makes it sound more out-of-the-way than it really is.

Origins

The title "Martha My Dear" was inspired by McCartney's Old English Sheepdog, named Martha. McCartney has said that the song itself is probably about his longtime love interest Jane Asher. Asher broke off their engagement in mid-1968. McCartney chides her with the lyrics in the song "...when you find yourself in the thick of it, help yourself to a bit of what is all around you..." Asher inspired many of McCartney's songs, including "Here, There and Everywhere", "I'm Looking Through You", "For No One" and "We Can Work It Out". (A later "Martha" lyric explains, "You have always been my inspiration..." McCartney has also said, cryptically, that the song is about his "muse"—the voice in his head that tells him what words and music to write.)

My Dear

My Dear is the debut album by the Anaheim, California rock band New Years Day, released in 2007 by TVT Records. The album was self-financed, self-produced, and recorded over an eight-month period at the home of producer Eugene Pererras. The band's debut music video for the lead single "I Was Right" won an MTVU "Freshman Face" poll and was added to the channel's playlist.

The album includes contributions from John Christianson and Dan Regan of Reel Big Fish, who provide horns on "My Sweet Unvalentine." "Brilliant Lies" includes lyrics written by Justin Pierre of Motion City Soundtrack.

Martha, mother of Simeon Stylites the Younger

Saint Martha (died 551) was the mother of Simeon Stylites the Younger. She is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church on July 4.

When her parents betrothed her to a young man, she seriously considered leaving home and withdrawing from the world. However, John the Baptist is said to have appeared to her and advised her to do as her parents had arranged and marry the man to whom they had betrothed her. Simeon Stylites was the child of this marriage.

She is said to have risen at midnight for prayer every night. She regularly helped those in need, visited the poor and orphans, and attended to the sick.

In the year before her death, she is said to have seen a number of angels with candles in their hands and to have learned the time of her upcoming death from them. The vision prompted her to even greater dedication to prayer and good works.

She died in 551 AD, and was buried near her son.

There have been many reports of her appearing to various people since her death, generally to heal the sick and offer instruction to people. The most noted of these was to an abbot of the monastery founded by her son. The abbot placed a votive candle on her grave with the instruction that the light never be allowed to be extinguished. Martha appeared to him saying that when the abbot burned a light on her grave, he was asking her to pray to the Lord for him.

Martha (band)

Martha are a four-piece DIY indie/punk band from Pity Me, a village in County Durham in the North East of England. After singles on their own Discount Horse label and Odd Box Records, their debut album was released on Fortuna Pop! and Salinas Records in 2014.

They describe themselves as vegan, straight edge, and anarchist. Two members of Martha also play in the band ONSIND, and another leads the band No Ditching.

These photos were taken at the session at Abbey Road and give us a little insight as to how they recorded Martha My Dear as well as who played on it. It was always thought that the only beatle that played on this song was Paul, but as you can see in the photos George harrison added guitar to this song as well. John and Ringo are absent though. A "day in the life" of the Beatles in the recording studio. On this date (Oct. 4th 1968) the Beatles recorded Martha My Dear. These photos were taken at the session at Abbey Road and give us a little insight as to how they recorded Martha My Dear as well as who played on it. It was always thought that the only beatle that played on this song was Paul, but as you can see in the photos George harrison added guitar to this song as well. John and Ringo are absent though. Paul wrote this song about his sheepdog Martha in 1968. Recorded at Trident Studios on October 4th and 5th, the pictures I included in the beginning show these sessions. George using his 1957 Lucy Les Paul, with Paul on the studio's C. Bechstein Concert Piano. This is the exact piano that was used on other hits like Hey Jude, Killer Queen, and Life on Mars? Here i'm using my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard into my Fender amp. George would've used either a blackface Fender amp or a Vox hybrid amp (Conqueror, Defiant, UL730 or 7120). Martha My Dear

"Martha My Dear" is a song by the Beatles written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney), which first appeared on the double album The Beatles (also known as The White Album). McCartney is the only Beatle to appear on this track.

Style and form

The song features a music hall-inspired piano line that recurs throughout the piece, as well as a brass section. The song modulates smoothly through several keys.

The song key is E-flat major, showing up embellished chords with jazzy sprinkled dissonances. The verse is a syncopated replicate of the first melodic section adding two extra beats, a technique similar to that used later by McCartney in “Two of Us”. Though the bridge is in the key of F major, the manner in which it abruptly sets in and exits makes it sound more out-of-the-way than it really is.

Origins

The title "Martha My Dear" was inspired by McCartney's Old English Sheepdog, named Martha. McCartney has said that the song itself is probably about his longtime love interest Jane Asher. Asher broke off their engagement in mid-1968. McCartney chides her with the lyrics in the song "...when you find yourself in the thick of it, help yourself to a bit of what is all around you..." Asher inspired many of McCartney's songs, including "Here, There and Everywhere", "I'm Looking Through You", "For No One" and "We Can Work It Out". (A later "Martha" lyric explains, "You have always been my inspiration..." McCartney has also said, cryptically, that the song is about his "muse"—the voice in his head that tells him what words and music to write.)
