What does a marine biologist do? A day as a marine biologist
This video shows the daily duties that are involved whilst working as a marine biologist. There are a lot of extra and very..dirty..realities you need to deal with a scientist!
I've been working for a short time as a postdoctoral research scientist at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, & this video gives you a taster & the reality of the sorts of day-to-day things marine scientists have to do when they are running lab experiments, when we aren't playing on the beach...the boring bits ;)
So...it's been a while! I have finally finished my PhD, and would like to restart my YouTube channel as I finally have the time :) & IT'S ALL I WANT TO FRICKIN DO :D
Still quite new to YouTube, so always welcome constructive criticism :)
Enjoy!

How to Become a Marine Biologist (step by step) // Marine Biology Careers & Marine Research
Everything you need to know about becoming a marine biologist!
In this video I dive DEEP into what it takes to become a marine biologist step by step, as well as the many unique challenges that come along with this being a marine scientist. I want to make clear that this video specifically focuses on marine biologists in academia (professors), coming from my research on this topic and personal experience with marine research and individuals with this profession. It’s important to acknowledge that there is an immense amount of variation in the paths that people take to get to such a position, and that each person will likely experience very different challenges and benefits. So take it all with a grain of salt!

I think it's also important to mention that you don't necessarily need to have a marine biology major to become a marine researcher. Many marine biology careers, including marine biologists, can benefit greatly from a diverse background of study. Studying general biology, environmental science, or even something like urban planning can still help you pursue a marine biologist career. The most important thing, above all, is to get hands on marine research experience along the way. Anyway, I hope you find this video useful!

As a Marine Geologist
As a professional marine geologist, I have had the incredible opportunity to explore some of the most fascinating and mysterious places on Earth. One of the most exhilarating experiences of my career was when I had the chance to explore a volcano that lies hidden beneath the sea.
The journey to reach this underwater volcano was not an easy one. It required months of planning, coordination with a team of experienced divers and researchers, and the use of advanced technology to navigate the treacherous waters. But the moment we descended into the depths of the ocean and caught our first glimpse of the volcano, all the hard work and preparation seemed worth it.
The sight that greeted us was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The volcano rose up from the ocean floor like a towering mountain, it...

The volcano rose up from the ocean floor like a towering mountain, its sides covered in colorful coral and teeming with life. As we got closer, we could see streams of bubbles rising to the surface, evidence of the volcanic activity happening deep below.
Our first task was to map out the perimeter of the volcano and take samples of the rocks and minerals that littered the seabed. We carefully collected samples using specialized equipment, making sure not to disturb the delicate ecosystem that had formed around the volcano. The rocks we collected would later be analyzed in the lab to help us better understand the geology of the area and the processes that had shaped the underwater landscape.
As we continued our exploration, we came across vents spewing hot, mineral-rich water into the ocean. These hydrothermal vents were home to a diverse array of unique and exotic creatures, adapted to survive in the extreme conditions created by the volcanic activity. We marveled at the sight of giant tube worms, ghostly white crabs, and shimmering schools of fish, all thriving in this otherworldly environment.
One of the most exciting moments of our expedition came when we discovered a newly formed lava flow on the side of the volcano. The molten rock had cooled and solidified into intricate formations, creating a stunning display of colors and textures. We carefully collected samples of the lava, knowing that they would provide valuable insights into the volcanic processes at work beneath the sea.
As we made our way back to the surface, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible privilege it was to be able to explore such a remote and untouched corner of the world. The experience had been both humbling and exhilarating, reminding me of the vastness and complexity of the natural world.
Back on dry land, I poured over the data and samples we had collected, piecing together a more complete picture of the underwater volcano and the forces that shaped it. The information we gathered would contribute to our understanding of the Earth's geology and help us better predict and prepare for future volcanic activity.
In the end, our exploration of the underwater volcano was not just a scientific endeavor, but a journey of discovery and wonder. It was a reminder of the beauty and power of the natural world, and a testament to the importance of continued exploration and research in unlocking its secrets. And as I looked back on our expedition, I knew that the memories and lessons learned would stay with me for a lifetime.
