Schneider was born in Paris to Daniel Gélin, a French actor, and Marie-Christine Schneider from Romania, who ran a bookshop in Paris. Gélin was married to actress and producer Danièle Delorme during his affair with Schneider; he never acknowledged Schneider as his daughter. Schneider was brought up by her mother in a town near the French border with Germany; she met her father only three times.
As a teenager, she adored films, going to the cinema up to four times a week. She left home at 15 after an argument with her mother and went to Paris, where she made her stage acting debut that same year. She eked out a living as a film extra and a model. While working as an extra, she met Brigitte Bardot, who knew her father. Bardot offered Schneider a room in her house. Through Bardot, Schneider met people in the film business. American actor Warren Beatty introduced her to the William Morris Agency. She was 18 when she had her first break in 1970, appearing in Madly, starring Alain Delon.
Maria Schneider was born in Merka (Měrkow) a rural German settlement then of approximately 160 inhabitants, 10km (6 miles) north of Bautzen and approximately 25km (15 miles) north of the frontier with a recently created country called Czechoslovakia. Her father was a farm worker. She left school at fifteen and embarked on a three year commercial apprenticeship which lasted from 1938 till 1941. After this she worked as a commercial assistant and secretary.
Journalist’s memoir portrays Maria Schneider's life beyond 'Last Tango in Paris'
At 19, French actor Maria Schneider was launched into the spotlight for her role in the erotic drama “Last Tango in Paris.” The notorious film made her famous, but haunted the rest of her life. But she was more than that to her cousin Vanessa, whose memoir “My Cousin Maria Schneider” tells her story. John Yang speaks to Vanessa Schneider and actor, writer and translator Molly Ringwald for more.

In 2014, Elisabeth Subrin, an American filmmaker and visual artist, created a blog about Schneider called Who Cares About Actresses? The blog grew into a documentary re-enactment and is now being developed as a feature-length film. This uncomfortable short version shows that not much has changed in the past 40 years in terms of what the industry expects from women on and off screen. In order to avoid becoming a collection of post-feminist theses, Subrin stays faithful to Schneider’s words (though she is played by three different actresses) and to the imagery of the time – the short was shot on 16mm film.
