Together with the Khanty people, the Mansi are politically represented by the Association to Save Yugra, an organisation founded during the Perestroika of the late 1980s. This organisation was among the first regional indigenous associations in Russia.
According to the 2010 census, there were 12,269 Mansi in Russia.
History
The ancestors of Mansi people populated the areas west of the Urals. Mansi findings have been unearthed in the vicinity of Perm.
In the first millennium BC, they migrated to Western Siberia where they assimilated with the native inhabitants. According to others they are originated from the south Ural steppe and moved into their current location about 500 AD.
The Mansi have been in contact with the Russian state at least since the 16th century when most of western Siberia was brought under Russian control by Yermak Timofeyevich. Due to their higher exposure to Russian and Soviet control, they are generally more assimilated than their northern neighbours, the Khanty.

UGRIC: HUNGARIAN, MANSI
Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
The Ugric or Ugrian languages are a proposed branch of the Uralic language family. The name Ugric is derived from Ugrians, an archaic exonym for the Magyars (Hungarians) and Yugra, a region in northwest Russia.
Ugric includes three subgroups: Hungarian, Khanty, and Mansi. The last two have traditionally been considered single languages, though their main dialects are sufficiently distinct that they may also be considered small subfamilies of three to four languages each. A common Proto-Ugric language is posited to have been spoken from the end of the 3rd millennium BC until the first half of the 1st millennium BC, in Western Siberia, east of the southern Ural Mountains. Trip to a Mansi village
The Mansi are a Finno-Ugric ethnic and linguistic group of tribes living in the Northern Ural Mountains. They are an endangered indigenous group. About 7 kilometers north of Ushma lies a smaller and more remote settlement named "Yurta Anyamov". This is where Anyamov clan lives. Today the tiny population survives by hunting and making cultural artifacts that are sold in town.
During Soviet times, the Mansi were encouraged to abandon their traditions and language and to assimilate. Settlements were built as an attempt to discourage the people from their nomadic ways and so that they could benefit from the communist system. However, the dominant ethnic groups in the region did not accept the Mansi as equals. Decades of marginalization and social degradation followed. Today there are about 11,...

Origin of the Finns, Hungarians and other Uralians
The Uralian or Uralic peoples, consisting of some incredibly diverse groups such as the Hungarians, Finns, Estonians, Sami (and some other groups you've probably never heard of) have one of the strangest origins of any group in Europe or Asia; the two continents they are divided between.
Uralians are a fascinating tribe that are spread out over many countries and regions in the modern day, with a history unlike any other in Europe of Asia; a unique fusion of Northern Eurasian culture and gene pools. Let me know your thoughts on these Uralic peoples. Thanks for watching!

Indigenous People of Russia: Khanty | Bear Games: Traditional Village Ritual
The harsh environment of the Russian North has shaped a special mindset of these people. The way they live their life in harmony with nature, their culture and traditions cannot but impress visitors from the outside world.
People here believe in spirits. Every animal and every plant is said to be endowed with a living soul. And the bear is believed to be the ancestor of people who are walking the earth today. So, it is no coincidence that when the Khanty get a bear, they perform a special ritual - bear games.
Winters here are long. Not to lose sight of their kids in the dark of the night, Khanty people have come up with simple games that would keep children busy. Locals craft all sorts of wooden puzzles that are just so fascinating to watch being solved.

Of the three languages, Khanty and Mansi have traditionally been set apart from Hungarian as Ob-Ugric, though features uniting Mansi and Hungarian in particular are known as well.
The Ugric language family was first noticed by Pope Pius II in his Cosmographia (1458), when he wrote that the Ostyaks (Khanty) and Voguls (Mansi) spoke a language like that of the Hungarians.

Today there are about 11,400 Mansi in Russia. Only about 150 live in the Sverdlovsk region.

Bear dance. Kurenya. Mansi folk song. In Mansi language. Culture of Mansi people (Ugric people from Ugra land (Khanty-Mansi autonomous region). Ugric peoples are: Mansis, Khanty and Hungarians. They all speak related Ugric languages of Uralic language family. Part of Ugric tribes moved from Ugra to Central Europe and are known as Hungarians (in 9th century Hungarians lived in Ukraine, first east of Dnieper in "Lebedia" (Levédia), then in Etelköz (Ukraine, btw Dnieper & Dniester), before finally settling in Pannonia, modern Hungary).

Today there are about 11,400 Mansi in Russia. Only about 150 live in the Sverdlovsk region.
