In honour of the first performance of La Traviata on march 6, 1853, here is an exceptional rendering of Violetta's first act aria performed by Magda Olivero. The film was recorded in 1964 in Naples in the usual manner of the time: it was synchronized with an already existing audio recording. In this case, a studio recording of Violetta's aria was used, it was recorded on August 7, 1940 in Torino with the Orchestra Sinfonica dell' EIAR, the tenor was Muzio Giovagnoli and the conductor Ugo Tansini.

This is a very rare and intimate moment; Magda Olivero is singing alone with no public during a rehearsal for a concert of religious arias to be given at the “Chiesa dei Cappuccini” in Milan in 1991. What we are witnessing is a genuine prayer address to the Holy Virgin and sung by a profound believer. To my knowledge, Gounod’s Ave Maria ever been sung with such interiority and fervour.
Note: The Ave Maria in sung in the original key of G major and the high B5 on “hora” at the end is mesmerizing in power and beauty, Magda Olivero was then 81 years old.

This rendering of the aria is part of a concert she gave at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1968. She sings it like a young girl in love, begging her father to let her go and buy the "anello".

Magda Olivero (née Maria Maddalena Olivero, 25 March 1910) is a soprano of the verismo-school of singing. She was born in Saluzzo, Italy. Olivero made her operatic debut in 1932 on Turin radio in Nino Cattozzo's (1886--1961) oratorio I misteri dolorosi. She performed widely and increasingly successfully until 1941, when she married and retired from performing. She returned to the stage ten years later, at the request of Francesco Cilea, who asked her to sing the title role in his opera Adriana Lecouvreur. That legendary Tosca took place on April 3, 1975. Schuyler Chapin, then director general of the Met, was later to write: “Having had the honour of presenting this great lady was one of the memorable pleasures of my years spent at the Metropolitan.”

In this master class, Magda Olivero teaches "Addio del passato" from La Traviata, and cannot help but sing quite a bit of it. Note that it had probably been 20-30 years since she had sung this music, and yet it comes out effortlessly with an expansive fil de voce on a single breath which is....well, breathtaking. Not bad for someone in their 80s!!!
Of course, Magda can't appear without demonstrating her patented ending for "Io son l'umille ancella" from Adriana Lecouvreur. As she told me, starting the penultimate note piano and drawing it out for an elongated crescendo was something she came up with when first preparing the role. Cilea exclaimed, "You have finally given my aria an ending!"

She returned to the stage ten years later, at the request of Francesco Cilea, who asked her to sing the title role in his opera Adriana Lecouvreur. From 1951 until her final retirement, Olivero sang in opera houses around the world. Among her most renowned interpretations were the leading parts in Adriana Lecouvreur, Iris, Fedora, La bohème, La fanciulla del West, La traviata, La Wally, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Mefistofele, and Turandot (as Liù.) That legendary Tosca took place on April 3, 1975. Schuyler Chapin, then director general of the Met, was later to write: “Having had the honour of presenting this great lady was one of the memorable pleasures of my years spent at the Metropolitan.”
The Met was packed to the rafters and all of New York seemed to be there: fans, critics, and stars like Zinka Milanov, Regina Resnik, Evelyn Lear, other celebrities that came incognito out of sheer curiosity.
In the Second Act, having been thrown on the couch by Scarpia, Tosca, reclining, begins the “Vissi d’arte.” Magda concluded the aria with a final crecendo on “così” that enflamed the house. The crowd stood up, delirious. In the face of this outburst, which seems unwilling to end, Magda, not expecting such a frenzy, remains motionless, surprised and obviously moved. This moment became a record ovation in the history of the Met for an aria, a full 22 minutes, almost as long as the 30-minute ovation at the end of the Act III.
She later told me about the unreal situation in which she had found herself. After the “Vissi d’arte,” not knowing when the applause would stop, she had to remain in the same position until the orchestra resumed. At intermission, the audience wondered whether they had really lived these intense moments, a unique evening at the opera. Walter Legge, producer of almost all of Maria Callas’s recordings and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf’s husband, said, “I have no doubt, she is the Duse 1 of the opera.”

In this master class, Magda Olivero teaches "Addio del passato" from La Traviata, and cannot help but sing quite a bit of it. Note that it had probably been 20-30 years since she had sung this music, and yet it comes out effortlessly with an expansive fil de voce on a single breath which is....well, breathtaking. Not bad for someone in their 80s!!!
Of course, Magda can't appear without demonstrating her patented ending for "Io son l'umille ancella" from Adriana Lecouvreur. As she told me, starting the penultimate note piano and drawing it out for an elongated crescendo was something she came up with when first preparing the role. Cilea exclaimed, "You have finally given my aria an ending!"
After demonstrating, she very humbly says that she's sure the student's version will be more beautiful. While the younger singer is clearly inspired by La Magda, I don't think she's in the same category.
