Ian Fleming's Lifestyle and HOW it Influenced JAMES BOND
A group dinner at GoldenEye is the perfect storytelling place to discuss how Ian Fleming's own lifestyle undoubtedly influenced James Bond's. Fleming's clothing, accessories, food, drink, and his love of locations helped to develop 007's own preferences and added significantly to the enjoying pleasure of the reader. Today, even the movies have connections back to the books and ultimately Fleming's own life and how he lived it....

Ian Fleming's Villa at GoldenEye | The History and the Experience
Fleming's home at GoldenEye has been a Holy Grail of locations for me for a long time, so come along as I take you on a personal and intimate tour of the villa from a fan and historical point of view. Unprecedented access is generously given to us so we can walk in the footsteps of the creator of James Bond, while also better understanding WHY Fleming chose this spot and Jamaica itself for his creative muse. We discuss his daily routine, his choices for his surroundings, and explain the emotional feeling of being in his world even for just a day.
Special thanks to the wonderful people at GoldenEye! https://www.goldeneye.com/

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY - How the Story Came to be
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, the movie, was not the story from Ian Fleming’s short story with the same title. In this episode, Dan and Tom decode the movie to see how the story came to be.
Some of the characters from the movie, and some of the plot points were adapted from Ian Fleming’s 1960 short stories “For Your Eyes Only” and “Risico”. Plus, the locations of the 2 stories and the movie are all different. People’s names have changed. The reason that people have wanted revenge has changed. The MacGuffin has changed.
Yet, even with all of that, the movie, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY turned into one of Roger Moore’s best movies playing James Bond.
And the 1968 movie ICE STATION ZEBRA definitely influenced the final...

They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater?
In this thrilling contest, Fleming’s case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels ...

Operation Ruthless was an unrealised British deception operation that planned to acquire German Enigma encryption information, codebooks and documents. It was planned by the Admiralty’s Operational Intelligence Centre, a primary beneficiary of the 'Ultra' decrypts, and was developed by Commander Ian Fleming. It involved using a captured German Heinkel bomber flown by a five-man British crew wearing German uniforms and covered with 'blood' and bandages, to follow on behind aircraft returning from a night bombing raid of the UK. As it passed over the middle of the English Channel, it would cut one engine and lose height with smoke pouring from a 'candle' in the tail, send an SOS distress signal and ditch into the sea. The crew would then take to a rubber dinghy, having ensured that the bomber sank before the Germans could identify it, and wait to be rescued by a German naval vessel, preferably a minesweeper. When on board, the 'survivors', one of whom was to speak fluent German, would then kill the German crew, and sail the captured vessel, complete with its Enigma machine and documentation, to a port on the south coast of England.

And the 1968 movie ICE STATION ZEBRA definitely influenced the final version of the movie FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. Dan and Tom lay it out in this episode!
So, take a listen.
We assume you’ve seen the movie FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. Have you read Fleming’s short stories “For Your Eyes Only” and “Risico”? If so, did Dan and Tom miss anything? Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and what you thought of this episode by dropping us a note at

In this thrilling contest, Fleming’s case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel 'Trigger Mortis'. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – was David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC’s adaptation of 'The Night Manager'.
‘Fleming is one of the very few writers – Charles Dickens and JK Rowling might be two others – who have transcended fiction, who have created stories that capture a particular time and place, that are universally recognisable and that are, it would seem, immortal,’ says Horowitz. ‘George Smiley is a fascinating character. James Bond is an icon. That’s the difference.’
By contrast, pointing to Le Carré’s own experiences in the secret service, Farr says: ‘John Le Carré turns espionage into existentialism. His canvas is betrayal — of the realm and of the heart. His greatness comes from the personal nature of that exploration.’
To illustrate their arguments, Horowitz and Farr called on a cast of actors to bring the novels to life.

James Bond The Man With The Golden Gun Ian Fleming Audiobook
The Man with the Golden Gun is the twelfth novel (and thirteenth book) of Ian Fleming's James Bond series. It was first published by Jonathan Cape in the UK on 1 April 1965, eight months after the author's death. The novel was not as detailed or polished as the others in the series, leading to poor but polite reviews. Despite that, the book was a best-seller.
The story centres on the fictional British Secret Service operative James Bond, who had been posted missing, presumed dead, after his last mission in Japan. Bond returns to England via the Soviet Union, where he had been brainwashed to attempt to assassinate his superior, M. Ian Fleming - The CBC Interview (Legendado)

The story centres on the fictional British Secret Service operative James Bond, who had been posted missing, presumed dead, after his last mission in Japan. After being "cured" by the MI6 doctors, Bond is sent to the Caribbean to find and kill Francisco Scaramanga, the titular "Man with the Golden Gun".
The first draft and part of the editing process was completed before Fleming's death and the manuscript had passed through the hands of his copy editor, William Plomer, but it was not as polished as other Bond stories. Much of the detail contained in the previous novels was missing, as this was often added by Fleming in the second draft. Publishers Jonathan Cape passed the manuscript to Kingsley Amis for his thoughts and advice on the story, although his suggestions were not subsequently used.
The novel was serialised in 1965, firstly in the Daily Express and then in Playboy; in 1966 a daily comic strip adaptation was also published in the Daily Express. In 1974 the book was loosely adapted as the ninth film in the Eon Productions James Bond series, with Roger Moore playing Bond and Fleming's cousin, Christopher Lee, as Scaramanga.

Ian Fleming - Rare Interview from 1963
Enjoy this rare interview with Ian Fleming, author of the BOND books. Talking openly and frankly about his career, this is a gem of an interview that took place a year before his death.
Ian Lancaster Fleming (28 May 1908 – 12 August 1964) was a British writer, journalist and naval intelligence officer who is best known for his James Bond series of spy novels. Fleming came from a wealthy family connected to the merchant bank Robert Fleming & Co., and his father was the Member of Parliament for Henley from 1910 until his death on the Western Front in 1917. Educated at Eton, Sandhurst and, briefly, the universities of Munich and Geneva, Fleming moved through several jobs before he started writing.

Raymond Chandler interviewed by Ian Fleming in 1958
The time Raymond Chandler and Ian Fleming got together to talk about Thrillers
Fleming and Chandler talk about protagonists James Bond and Philip Marlowe in this conversation between two masters of their genre. They discuss heroes and villains, the relationship between author and character and the differences between the English and American thriller. Fleming contrasts the domestic 'tea and muffins' school of detective story with the American private eye tradition and Chandler guides Fleming through the modus operandi of a mafia hit while marvelling at the speed with which his fellow author turns out the latest Bond adventure.

Ian Fleming's 'Moonraker' - as made in 1959 by Warwick Films
Irving Allen and Albert R. Broccoli renegotiate the rights to film Ian Fleming’s ‘James Bond’ books in 1957. Their company, Warwick Films who have made several successful films across the 1950s, (and who have a distribution deal with Columbia), option three films to be produced over a ten-year period including titles such as: ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘From Russia With Love’. The first being, ‘Moonraker’ which is released in 1959.
The film was adapted from a script written by Fleming himself and was based on his own novel of the same name. This script was then re-written for the screen by Richard Maibaum.
After names such as David Niven, Cary Grant and Patrick MacGoohan are floated, the producers settle on Lithuanian-South African actor Laurence Harvey, to play the coveted role of ‘007’....

The Watches of Ian Fleming's James Bond 007 Books
The James Bond franchise has become a worldwide sensation and, back in the 1950s when Ian Fleming's original novels were written, the exotic locations and adventures described brought colour to reader's imaginations. Importantly, this writer made the choice to include an awful lot of brands in order to build a world for his characters to inhabit. In this pursuit, watches became a central part of the James Bond character and, in this video, I would like to present the few occasions when watches were actually named for the protagonists and villains to wear.

While working for Britain's Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War, Fleming was involved in planning Operation Goldeneye and in the planning and oversight of two intelligence units, 30 Assault Unit and T-Force. His wartime service and his career as a journalist provided much of the background, detail and depth of the James Bond novels.
Fleming wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952. It was a success, with three print runs being commissioned to cope with the demand. Eleven Bond novels and two collections of short stories followed between 1953 and 1966. The novels revolve around James Bond, an officer in the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6. Bond is also known by his code number, 007, and was a commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. The Bond stories rank among the best-selling series of fictional books of all time, having sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Fleming also wrote the children's story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang and two works of non-fiction. In 2008, The Times ranked Fleming 14th on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
Fleming was married to Ann Charteris, who was divorced from the second Viscount Rothermere because of her affair with the author. Fleming and Charteris had a son, Caspar. Fleming was a heavy smoker and drinker for most of his life and succumbed to heart disease in 1964 at the age of 56.
Two of his James Bond books were published posthumously; other writers have since produced Bond novels. Fleming's creation has appeared in film twenty-six times, portrayed by seven actors.

BTW, this is my 700th video on YouTube! Seems appropriate, eh?

After names such as David Niven, Cary Grant and Patrick MacGoohan are floated, the producers settle on Lithuanian-South African actor Laurence Harvey, to play the coveted role of ‘007’.
